Stout 7, Yellowjackets 1

For most of the fall soccer season, the Yellowjackets have enjoyed weather that makes one appreciate playing the sport outdoors. Saturday at the Superior Soccer Complex was not one of those days, however. Strong winds off of Lake Superior and heavy rains made for a miserable day on the pitch, and UW-Stout didn't do anything to make the day even a little bit bright.

UW-Stout scored four times in the second half to take the WIAC tilt at the Superior Soccer Complex by a 7-1 score.

The loss was the fourth in the last five matches for the Yellowjackets, who haven't tasted victory since September 17.

Stout opened the scoring early as Duluth native Whitney Solomon scored an unassisted goal in the eighth minute to make it 1-0. It went to 2-0 in the 20th minute when another Duluth native, Alix Hyduke scored from close range on a kick that got past Yellowjacket goalkeeper Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) down low. The Blue Devils added another goal just 2:39 later when Jenna Kizlik scored from long range on a free kick to make it a 3-0 game.

The Yellowjackets broke through just over two minutes after the Blue Devils stretched the lead to 3-0. Rachel Wallace (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia) started the play with a free kick, and Nichole Casler (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) finished it, banging home a rebound for her first goal of the season at 24:53 to shave the deficit to two.

Things stayed 3-1 through halftime and then Stout, like the skies, opened things up.

Lauren Kizlik scored in the 56th minute on an assist from Hyduke to make the score 4-1. The lead bulged to 5-1 when Kelly Conn tallied an unassisted marker at 73:32. Sarina Umlauf was sprung on a breakaway by Conn and scored in the 81st minute to increase th lead to 6-1. The Blue Devils closed out the scoring with 1:15 remaining when Addy Maher scored on a breakaway to make the final score 7-1.

Paige faced 19 shots in the match and finished the day with 12 saves. At the other end Paige Meyer made two saves for the Blue Devils.

The Yellowjackets (3-8-1, 0-3-0 WIAC) return to action on Wednesday, October 9 when they host UW-River Falls at the Superior Soccer Complex beginning at 4:00 p.m.
