Box Score

River Falls 3, Yellowjackets 1

The Yellowjacket women's soccer team entered Wednesday's conference match with UW-River Falls with a roster decimated by injuries. How depleted were they? Every player who started the match would have to play the full 90 minutes in order to have a full contingent on the field.

Despite the fatigue that playing a full contest would bring, the Yellowjackets put in a gutty effort against the Falcons. Unfortunately the effort was not rewarded and River Falls escaped with a 3-1 victory at the Superior Soccer Complex.

River Falls opened the scoring at 9:14 of the first half when Alyssa Manor started a play with a corner kick from the right side and Missy Barnett finished it, putting home her first goal of the season from the box to make it 1-0. The Falcons stretched the lead to 2-0 on a very similar play. Again Manor started things with a corner kick from the right, and this time it was Anna Kouba who ended it, scoring her fourth of the year from inside.

The Yellowjackets got their lone goal of the match in the 27th minute. Leading scorer Chelsea Cossin (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) took a lead pass from Lily Marcelius (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) and broke in the left side, where she drilled a shot home from about ten yards out to cut the lead in half at 2-1. For Cossin it was her third goal of the season.

For the remainder of the first half the score remained at 2-1, but much of the play stayed either at midfield or on the Falcon side of center. The Yellowjackets just weren't able to generate anything in tight and get the equalizer.

River Falls salted the game away at 56:07 when Kouba scored her second goal of the match beating Yellowjacket goalkeeper Kalea Hatlewick (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) to make it 3-1.

Hatlewick had a great game in goal for the Yellowjackets, making several difficult saves, particularly in the closing minutes of the second half to keep the Yellowjackets within striking distance. She finished the match with 11 saves on 14 shots. River Falls goalkeeper Erica Cimochowski made one stop in the match.

The Yellowjackets (3-10-1, 0-4-0 WIAC) will be on the road at UW-Stevens Point for their next match. Game time on Saturday, October 12 is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
