Box Score
Yellowjackets 12, Hamline Universirty 1
Ahh! The beginning of hockey season is here. The smell of fresh zamboni fumes rang in the new hockey season oh so nicely. The Yellowjackets rang in the fresh new chapter with a fast start en route to a 12-1 victory.
The Yellowjackets came out from the opening face-off playing with a reckless abandon, setting the pace with a couple of solid scoring opportunities. Alexis Reid (Dryden, Ontario/Dryden) got the tide rolling for the Yellowjackets when she took a pass from Mara Teschendorf (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) in front of the net and trickled a shot home to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead at 7:04 of the first period. Â
For the balance of the first period, Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) controlled the tempo for the Yellowjackets as she netted two goals. The first one came at 11:01 of the first period off an assist from Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) to make the score 2-0. Schultz eventually made the score 3-0 on a power play goal at 17:49 of the first period. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/) and Sheryl Kaskiw (Souris, Manitoba/Souris Collegiate) were awarded the assists on the play.
The Yellowjackets came out firing on all cylinders from start to finish throughout the course of the second period. They saw their goal total triple in the second period, pounding out nine goals. Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) led-off the attack with a wrist shot that beat Hamline goaltender Sam Stark to make the score 4-0 at 00:47 of the second period. The Pipers answered back at 2:53 when Chelsea Koehn fooled Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) high on the glove side to put them within 4-1.
However, the Yellowjackets didn't look back an inch, and Teschendorf was a huge reason why as she added a goal at 3:25 of the second period to make the score 5-1. At that point, Hamline turned the goaltending duties over to Mary Shefveland. She didn't fare any better, Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) lit her up with a goal at 4:04 of the second period to extend their lead to 6-1. Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) made it 7-1 with a shot in front of the net at 6:32 of the second period. Â
Work wasn't done for the second period as the Yellowjackets added four more goals. Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) was first when she netted a goal off a pass from Teal Crosson (Alexander, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) to make the score 8-1 at 10:58. Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) built on that with a shorthanded goal at 13:09 to make the score 9-1. Olmstead added her second goal of the game at 14:43 of the second period to give the Yellowjackets their tenth goal of the game. Schultz closed out the scoring for the Yellowjackets with a wrist shot at 15:14 of the second period to make the score 11-1.
After a wild and crazy second period, the Yellowjackets were only able to muster one goal. That goal came from Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) at 4:57 of the third period to make the score 12-1.
Stark and Shefveland combined for 17 saves for the Pipers while Peters stopped 17 shots for the Yellowjackets.
