Box Score
Yellowjackets 2, UW-Eau Claire 2
The Yellowjackets got their first taste of WIAC play on Friday night against the Blugolds from UW-Eau Claire. Despite outshooting the Blugolds by a 2:1 margin, the Yellowjackets were only able to muster a 2-2 tie as an end result. Â
The Yellowjackets came out firing on all cylinders from the get go, firing 15 shots on goal within the first 15:00 of play. However, it was the Blugolds who capitalized first and it took them two shots to do so. Hadley Cookson's goal at 15:29 of the first period gave the Blugolds a 1-0. Â
The Yellowjackets answered early in the second period in a bizarre way. On a delayed penalty call, the Blugolds pulled goaltender Paige Turner for the extra attacker at 4:11 of the second period. Paige Sedlar fired a shot that was saved by Yellowjacket goaltender Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate), who took the puck and scored on the Blugold empty net at 4:16 of the second period to tie the game 1-1.
The tide started to roll the Yellowjackets way toward the end of the second period. Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) had a lot to do with that when she fired a shot that went off Turner's pads and found the stick of Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary), who put home the rebound in front of the net at 17:53 of the second period to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead. Ashley Baugher eventually spoiled the Yellowjackets' lead at 6:38 of the third period to tie the game at two goals a piece. Â
Turner finished with 46 saves for the Blugolds while Peters had 17 saves for the Yellowjackets.
The Yellowjackets (3-0-2, 0-1-0 WIAC) will return to Wessman Arena tomorrow Sat., Nov. 16 against UW-Eau Claire. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
