Box Score

Marian 7, Yellowjackets 3

It was a tale of two games on Friday night at Wessman Arena. The first game was exactly what the Yellowjackets wanted - outskating, outshooting and outplaying Marian. Then came the second game, and the tables turned on the home team as the Sabres gathered themselves and exploded.

After falling behind early in the second period, Marian exploded, scoring six unanswered goals on their way to a 7-3 win over the Yellowjackets.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Yellowjackets, who will have to regroup quickly heading into Saturday night's border battle against St. Scholastica. Marian, on the other hand, has now won four games in a row.

The teams skated through a scoreless first period with the Yellowjackets outshooting the Sabres 13-5 in the process. The first period momentum carried over into the second and the Yellowjackets took advantage, drawing first blood at 3:51. Pat Dalbec (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) had the puck in the right circle of the Marian zone and fed a perfect pass to the left circle where Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate Institute) ripped a one-timer past Sabre goaltender Mike Baldwin to make it 1-0.

Following the goal the Yellowjackets continued to press and held the lead through the midway point of the game, but that's when Marian came alive.

A botched play in the neutral zone essentially left Marian with a 2-on-0 coming back the the Yellowjackets' direction. Robbie Bailey skated into a loose puck and the top of the left circle and rifled a shot over the glove of Dayn Belfour (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate) to tie the game at 1-1. Just 2:20 later Marian took the lead for good when Brodie Jamieson drove the net and had a puck deflect in off his bodie to make it 2-1. Then in the final minute of the period Ashton Reinboldt broke up a pass intended for Dalbec in the high slot and Brian Berger took it the other way, beating Belfour high on the glove side from the right circle with just 16.4 seconds left in the frame to send the Yellowjackets to the locker room down 3-1.

Things continued that way in the third period.

With Derek Stauber (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) off for slashing Marian capitalized on the power play and Jamieson scored his second of the game just 1:16 into the period, stretching Marian's lead to 4-1. It was the first power play goal the Yellowjackets have allowed all season.

It went to 5-1 at 8:28 when a fortunate bounce caught Belfour leaning one way while the puck went the other, and former Yellowjacket Tyler Klein was there to fire it into the open net for his first of the game. Just over a minute later Klein struck again, this time shorthanded, as he finished off a perfect passing play to make it 6-1 at 9:54. The goal also spelled the end of the night for Belfour, who was relieved in net by freshman Zach Thompson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld).

The Yellowjackets finally stopped the bleeding at 11:59. The puck bounced around the front of the net in a mad scramble and Nick Stoskopf (Warroad, Minn./Warroad) banged the loose puck home for his second goal in as many games, pulling the Yellowjackets back to within 6-2. At 15:01 they made it a 6-3 game when Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) made a beautiful play in the neutral zone, carried into Marian territory on the right side and sent a pass across to Dalbec in the left circle. The senior captain made no mistake, blasting a shot past Baldwin for his second of the year to make it 6-3.

Marian answered less than a minute later, however, and again it was Klein, who stole a pass in the slot of his own zone and sped off on a breakaway, beating Thompson with a low shot to complete the hat trick and make the final score 7-3.

Klein finished the night with three goals and an assist. It marks the first hat trick that the Yellowjackets have allowed since January 17, 2009.

Baldwin had a big night in net for Marian, picking up the win and improving to 2-0-0 on the year after the 40 save performance. Belfour got the loss for the Yellowjackets, finishing with 19 saves on 25 shots. He is now 1-2-0 for the season. Thompson played the final 10:06 of the game and made four saves on five shots.

Marian went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Yellowjackets were 0-for-2. The Yellowjackets took six penalties in the game for 12 minutes, while the Sabres took four for eight minutes.

The Yellowjackets (2-4-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) will head across the river to Duluth on Saturday to take on St. Scholastica at Mars-Lakeview Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and can be heard live locally on 91.3 FM KUWS, beginning with the pre-game show around 6:45 p.m. If you are outside the local listening area, you can tune in on the Internet through the iFan Sports Network or through Wisconsin Public Radio.
