Box Score
Yellowjackets 2, Gustavus Adolphus College 1
After dominating MIAC foe Hamline University a week ago, the Yellowjackets knew there were no gimmies on this particular weekend against #3 Gustavus Adolphus College. Seeing them participate in the Frozen Four at Wessman Arena in March lit a fire under them and proved they are on that level with a 2-1 victory. Â
That fire the Gusties lit under them was evident through out the first period of play. Although Gustavus Adolphus had the upper hand in shots on goal 10-6 in the opening period, it was the Yellowjackets capitalizing on their chances. Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) didn't waste any time when she gave the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal at 5:43 of the first period. It wasn't too long before the Yellowjackets added their second goal when Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) took a pass from Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/) and put a shot past Gustie goaltender Lindsey Hibbard to extend the lead to 2-0 at 9:50 of the first period.Â
Now with the momentum in the Yellowjackets' favor, it was up to the Gustie's to see if they had an answer. That answer was a goal by Maddie Bergh at 3:40 of the second period to cut the Yellowjacket lead in half to 2-1. The Yellowjackets did enough to hold their own throughout the balance of the contest to secure the win.
Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) finished with 21 saves for the Yellowjackets while Hibbard stopped 19 shots for the Gusties.
The Yellowjackets (3-0, 0-0 WIAC) will look to sweep Gustavus Adolphus College tomorrow, Nov. 9., in St. Peter, Minn. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
