Yellowjackets prove too much for Auggies

Kelsey Firkus celebrates her first goal of the season in the second period of Tuesday's 3-1 win over Augsburg.
Box Score
Yellowjackets 3, Augsburg 1

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team had an uncharacteristically tough weekend last weekend. Uncharacteristic compared to the previous weeks of the season, as they gained only one point in a weekend series with UW-River Falls and experienced their first weekend of the season where they failed to pick up a win. They were determined not to allow the final week of play in 2013 to be a repeat, and started things off right on Tuesday night.

With a goal in the first period and two in the second period, the Yellowjackets got back in the win column with an all-around solid 3-1 victory over Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn.

The Yellowjackets opened the scoring at 12:54 of the opening period on the power play as Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) scored her fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0. Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) and Sheryl Kaskiw (Souris, Manitoba/Souris Collegiate) assisted on the play.

It stayed that way until the Auggies tied the game at 7:51 of the second period when Darby Lindgren scored her third goal of the season.

The Yellowjackets took the lead for good at 14:15 of the second period when Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/), on assists from Schultz and Kelsey Firkus (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Chilliwack Senior Secondary) scored her fourth goal of the season to make it 2-1. A few minutes later the Yellowjackets added an insurance goal as Firkus picked up her first goal of the season at 18:12 to increase the lead to two goals, 3-1. Kaskiw and Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) had the assists on the second power play goal of the game for the Yellowjackets.

Neither team was able to puncture the other team's defense in the third period, and the Yellowjackets took home the two-goal win.

Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate) made her second start of the season and earned her first collegiate win, finishing the game with 21 saves. At the other end Brianna Schulz took the loss and made 29 saves.

Augsburg took four penalties for eight minutes while the Yellowjackets were whistled three times for six minutes. The Yellowjackets were 2-for-3 on the power play, while Augsburg was 0-for-2.

The Yellowjackets (6-2-3, 2-2-2 WIAC) close out the 2013 portion of the schedule with a weekend series on the road at Marian University, beginning on Friday evening. Game time from Fon du Lac is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
