Yellowjackets shut out Sabres

Lynne Larson had a 2-point night on Friday as the Yellowjacket women's hockey team shut out Marian.

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team looks to be back on the winning track, and they're getting it done away from home. On Friday night they picked up their second road win of the week, as they blanked the Sabres of Marian University 4-0 on Friday at the Blue Line Ice Center in Fond du Lac, Wis.

Kelsey Firkus (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Chilliwack Senior Secondary) got the scoring started for the Yellowjackets on Friday, scoring for the second game in a row on assists from Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) and Sheryl Kaskiw (Souris, Manitoba/Souris Collegiate), pushing them ahead 1-0 at 7:25 of the first period. The eventual game-winning goal was the second of the season for Firkus.

In the second period the Yellowjackets blew the game open, scoring once early and once late. Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) scored her first goal as a Yellowjacket just 2:21 into the frame to make it a 2-0 game. Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) and Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) assisted. In the final minute of the period Schultz put the Yellowjackets ahead 3-0 with her sixth goal of the season.

The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring late in the game, when Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) scored with just 1:46 remaining in the game to make the final score 4-0. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/) and Schultz assisted.

Schultz finished the night with a goal and two assists, while Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/) had a goal and an assist and Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) two assists to pace the Yellowjacket offense.

Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) improved to 6-2-3 on the year and earned her second shutout of the season, finishing the game with 12 saves. Amanda Alexander made 28 saves in the losing effort for Marian.

Marian went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Yellowjackets didn't have a chance on the power play.

The Yellowjackets (7-2-3, 2-2-2 WIAC) and the Sabres will play the second game of their weekend series on Saturday, December 14. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
