Yellowjackets squeak past Green Knights

Coming off a sweep of Marian University, the Yellowjackets had to match that performance in their quest of home-ice advantage in the NCHA playoffs.  This time, they had to do it on the road.  Mission accomplished.  The Yellowjackets picked up two points in the standings as they squeaked past St. Norbert College 2-1.
 
Unlike last week, the Yellowjackets' struggled to find the back of the net despite picking up the win.  Green Knight's goaltender Kaley Gibson surrendered two goals while facing 40 shots on goal in the process.  Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) scored one of those goals at 3:12 of the first period on a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle that beat Gibson on the glove side.  That goal gave the Yellowjackets an early 1-0 lead.  The Green Knights would respond in the second period when Zoe Kurth recovered a Yellowjacket turnover and skated up toward Yellowjacket goaltender Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate).  Kurth finished the job with an unassisted goal at 10:45 of the second period to tie the game at a goal a piece.
 
The Yellowjackets would come up big at the most crucial time of the game.  Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) added her sixth goal of the season at 16:40 of the third period when she took a pass from Ashley Martin (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) from the right circle.  Olmstead put the puck home in front of the net to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead and eventual victory.
 
Peters stopped 26 shots for the Yellowjackets while Gibson stood up 40 shots for St. Norbert College.
 
The Yellowjackets (12-6-1, 9-5-1 NCHA) will look to sweep the Green Knights tomorrow (Feb. 2nd) in De Pere, Wis.  Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
