Box Score

The Lions from Finlandia University enter this game as the last leg on a disappointing season to put it nicely.  They came out of the gates with two straight shots on net, hoping there was a slight chance to pull off an upset and avoid a winless season.  Unfortunately for them, those two shots were the highlight of the contest as the Yellowjackets dominated by a score of 10-1.

The juices started flowing for the Yellowjackets at 2:41 of the first period when Hayley Epema (Crookston, Minn./Crookston) fired a slap shot from the top of the left circle.  The shot found its way to Mara Teschendorf (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North)'s stick and into the net to make the score 1-0.  The Yellowjackets didn't capitalize again until 19:04 of the first period when Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) fired a wrist shot from about ten feet back to make the score 2-0.

The flood gates continued to open for the Yellowjackets in the second period as they added four more goals.  Chelsey Wierschem (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) was next in line to score for the Yellowjackets when she poked a shot in front of the net that fooled Lion goaltender Breanna Hynes to make the score 3-0 at 4:44 of the second period.  Wierschem went on to notch another goal for the Yellowjackets at 7:41 of the second period when she took a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle to make the score 4-0.  De Kezel added another goal at 11:28 of the second period when she skated around a few defenders up the middle and let a wrist shot go into the net to make the score 5-0.  Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) closed out the scoring for the second period at 12:44 to extend the Yellowjacket lead to 6-0.

The Yellowjackets added another four goals in the third period.  De Kezel put the finishing touches on a hat trick to widen the Yellowjacket lead to 7-0 at 3:33 of the third period.  Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) was the third Yellowjacket in the contest to have a multi-goal game when she had goals at 9:26 and 11:51 of the third period respectively to make the score 8-0, then 9-0.  Leading scorer Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) capped off the scoring for the contest when she poked a shot past Hynes to make the score 10-0 at 12:35 of the third period.  However, the Lions avoided a shutout on Siera Hache's goal with :04 left in the contest to narrow the Yellowjacket lead to 10-1.

Megan Leikkari (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I) tallied nine saves for the Yellowjackets while Hynes came up with 38 stops for Finlandia University.

The Yellowjacket (15-7-2, 12-6-1 NCHA) will wrap up the regular season tomorrow (Feb. 16th) against Finlandia University at Wessman Arena.  Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
