Green Knights send Yellowjackets packing

Bailey Lane
Box Score

St. Norbert College 6, Yellowjackets 5
Box Score

The women in black and yellow knew they had to either take the throne from the Green Knights or go back to the hive.  Despite a great effort and plenty of scoring chances, the Green Knights had the Yellowjackets packing their bags as they fell 6-5.

The Yellowjackets set the tone in this scoring frenzy when Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) fed a pass over to Kelsey Firkus (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Chilliwack Senior Secondary) where she was ten feet in front of the net.  She skated up and poked a shot past Green Knight goaltender Kaley Gibson to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead at 6:58 of the first period.  Both teams found success on the power play during the first 20:00 of the contest.  St. Norbert capitalized on a Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) tripping penalty when Andrea Senne swung a pass to the top of the left circle where Zoe Kurth was standing all alone.  She fired a wrist shot that fooled Yellowjacket goaltender Megan Leikkari (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I) to tie the game at a goal a piece at 9:04 of the first period.

That didn't faze the Yellowjackets one bit as they responded with a power play goal of their own.  Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) recovered the puck in the Yellowjackets' end and skated up one-on-one with a St. Norbert defender.  She juked out that defender with solid puck handling and let a wrist shot go into the net to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead.  The power play goal came at 12:35 of the first period.  The contest continued to be up and down throughout the course of the first period as the Green Knights and Yellowjackets traded goals to close it out.  St. Norbert's Ali Parker helped her squad strike first when she fired a wrist shot to the back of the net to tie the game at two goals a piece at 16:07 of the first period.  However, the power play continued to work wonders for the Yellowjackets as Chelsey Wierschem (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) put home a shot with the extra skater to give the Yellowjackets a 3-2 lead at 17:55 of the first period.

The second period proved to be just like the first period for the sole fact that there were a lot of goals.  The Green Knights tied the game 3-3 at 4:21 of the second period before the Yellowjackets answered back yet again, on the power play.  This time it was Bailey Lane (Armada, Mich./Armada) providing the spark for the Yellowjackets on special teams when she poked a shot home to give the Yellowjackets a 4-3 lead at 13:37 of the second period.  However, The Yellowjackets came right back and gave up a shorthanded goal :14 seconds later.  Zoe Kurth recovered the puck at the Yellowjackets' end and skated up the ice on a two-on-one.  She took it up all alone and fired a wrist shot past Leikkari to tie the game at four goals a piece.

The Green Knights took the lead for good at 15:33 of the second period when Henriette Ostergaard notched a goal to give them a 5-4 lead.  Karissa Anderson extended the Green Knight lead on the power play at 8:55 of the third period to make the score 6-4.  The Yellowjackets were only able to respond with one goal when Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) put home a power play goal at 14:55 of the third period to make the score 6-5.

Leikkari made 12 saves for the Yellowjackets while Gibson came up with 16 stops for the Green Knights.

The Yellowjackets wrap up the 2012-2013 season with a 16-9-2 record.
