Box Score

The Yellowjackets showed more promise in this contest by cutting down on the errors and coming up with more runs.  Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as they fell 6-3 to the Spartans.

The Spartans chipped in with a run in the first inning Shawna Dole and Amber Meyer led the game off with back-to-back singles.  This set up an RBI single by Caitlin Aulwes to give Dubuque a 1-0 lead.

The fourth inning saw the Yellowjackets and Spartans tack on two runs each.  Kelli Gerace and Mackenzie Hadler led the attack for Dubuque with a walk each.  They each advanced two more bases on a steal, then a groundout by Mackenzie Hadler.  Dole drove them two home with a single to extend the Spartan lead to 3-0. The Yellowjackets responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning Lindsay Garay (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern High School) reached on an error and advanced to second base on the throw.  Whitney Brugman (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) followed that up by reaching on an error, scoring Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) (pinch runner for Garary) on the wild throw to make the score 3-1.  Melissa Clark (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) eventually drove in Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) (Brugman's pinch runner) to narrow the Spartan lead to 3-2.

The Spartans notched three runs in the seventh inning.  Dole and Meyer slapped singles and stole a base to put runners on second and third base.  Dole scored on Susie Danielewski's walk to make the score 4-2.  Laura Magana extended the Spartan lead with an RBI double that scored Meyer to extend the Spartan lead to 5-2.  Danielewski eventually came around to score on an Aulwes groundout to make the score 6-2.  The Yellowjackets responded with a run in the seventh inning when Garay drove in Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) on an RBI single to make the score 6-3.

Amanda Le Bard (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) took the loss for the Yellowjackets, surrendering six runs (five earned) on four walks and four strikeouts in six innings of work.

Box Score

With a combination of playing smart softball and producing more hits, the Yellowjackets were able to come up with their first win of the 2013 season.

The Yellowjackets chipped in a run in the first inning when Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) came around to score when Garay reached on by an error by the left fielder to make the score 1-0.  The Raiders responded with a run in the second inning when Annie Thomas and Ruth Spragins produced singles.  This set up a Mikala Wendt RBI single to tie the game at a run a piece.

Three runs were produced by the Yellowjackets in the second inning.  Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) smacked a triple that brought home Liz Jezierski (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet), who walked, to make the score 2-1.  Elle Niemela (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) followed that up with a two-run home run to make the score 4-1.  The Yellowjackets tacked on another run in the third inning when Brugman led off with a triple and came home on a Summer Lindelien (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount High School) single to make the score 5-1.

The Yellowjackets came up big offensively in the sixth inning.  Haider, Garary, and Brugman led off with walks to load the bases for Clark, who was hit by a pitch, making the score 6-1.  Lindelien followed up with an RBI single to make the score 7-1.  Jezierski and Kelsey Nelson (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) went on to produce back-to-back bases loaded walks to make the score 9-1.

Gross pitched a complete game giving up a run on seven hits while walking one and striking out two.

The Yellowjacket (1-4, 0-0 WIAC) will return to action in Fort Myers, Fla. on Friday, March 15th.  They will take on Wheaton College at 9:00 a.m. and Rockford College at 11:00 a.m
