Volleyball team takes two in Texas

The Yellowjacket volleyball team opened the 2013 season at the University of Dallas Invitational in Irving, Texas and swept their first two matches of the year.

Yellowjackets 3, Sul Ross State 0

In the opener they took down the Lobos of Sul Ross State University out of Alpine, Texas in a straight sets, claiming the match 25-7, 25-21 and 21-18.

Senior Brooke Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) led the Yellowjackets in the first match of the day, knocking down seven kills and adding four blocks. Junior Alissa Autio (Floodwood, Minn./) also contributed seven kills. Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) had a solid opening match with 28 set assists and Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River) finished the match with eight digs.

Yellowjackets 3, Dallas 0

The second match of the day saw the Yellowjackets take on the hosts from the University of Dallas, but the result was the same as the first as the Yellowjackets picked up the straight-set victory by scores of 25-11, 30-28 and 25-23.

Deadrick topped her performance of the first match with 36 assists and also had four aces from the service line. Benefitting up front from the Deadrick assists was the trio of Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater), Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) and Vonasek. Tynen led the way with 13 kills, while Zimmerman had nine and Vonasek seven. For the second match in a row Vonasek also had four blocks.

Defensively Tynen and Zimmerman had 16 digs apiece while Peterson added eight.

In day two of the tournament the Yellowjackets will take on Millsaps College from Jackson, Miss. before facing the University of Dallas in a second-day rematch.
