Box Score

Yellowjackets 1, North Central 0

After a tough defeat at the hands of Macalester on a muggy Monday evening in St. Paul, Minn., the Yellowjacket women's soccer team rebounded in fine fashion on Tuesday afternoon. Playing arguably their most complete contest of the young season, the Yellowjackets scored early in the second half and rode that goal all the way to their second win of the season, 1-0 over North Central College in Minneapolis, Minn.

The win improves the Yellowjackets to 2-3-0 on the year.

Play was relatively even in the first half, with the Yellowjackets holding a slight edge in shots attempted at 7-5. The shots on goal were even at 4-4 and neither team was able to get into the scoring column through the first 45 minutes.

That all changed early in the second half, as the Yellowjackets continued to apply pressure and North Central could not keep up. At the 50-minute mark, the Yellowjackets broke through and took the lead. Freshman Samantha Hanson (Duluth, Minn./East) beat North Central goalkeeper Rachael Chant for her first collegiate goal five minutes after halftime to stake the Yellowjackets to the 1-0 lead. Hanson's marker was unassisted.

The Yellowajckets kept the pressure coming, outshooting the Rams 4-1 in the half and finishing the game with an 11-6 edge in the category. The shots on goal were closer however, with the Yellowjackets bettering the Rams 6-5.

Kalea Hatlewick (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) made her third start of the season and picked up her second victory, finishing with five saves. The junior goalkeeper's record now stands at 2-3-0 on the season. The shutout was also the second of her career. At the other end Chant also had five stops and fell to 1-3-0.

The Yellowjackets will remain on the road and in non-conference play for the next three matches. On Saturday, September 14 they will return to the Twin Cities to take on St. Catherine University. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
