Box Score

Macalester 2, Yellowjackets 0

Just as the Yellowjacket women's soccer team found out earlier in the week, the men's soccer team learned on Friday that Macalester College isn't the most gracious of hosts on the pitch.

After a scoreless first half the Scots came to life in the second half despite being outshot by the visitors from Superior, scoring a pair of goals to take the match 2-0.

The first half of the match was even, as the shots attempted were 8-8 and the match scoreless after 45 minutes of play. The Yellowjackets bettered Macalester in shots on goal in the first half at 3-1.

In the second half the Yellowjackets held a significant lead in shots at 9-5, but the shots on goal were 3-1 for Macalester in the half, and they were able to find the back of the net twice as well.

At 56:59 of play Will Matsuda gave the Scots a 1-0 lead, getting control off a crossing pass from Dylan Wong and sneaking past Yellowjacket goalkeeper Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) to score his second goal of the season. In the 71st minute Macalester stretched the lead as Will Mackaman scored on the header off an assist from Robin Forslund to make it a 2-0 score.

Zeke Vainer got the win for Macalester, making three saves for the Scots and handing the Yellowjackets their second shutout in their last three matches. Elder took the loss for the Yellowjackets, finishing the match with two saves on four shots. His record stands at 2-3-1 on the year.

Brian Grand (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) and Brian Chapman (Maple Grove, Minn./) led the Yellowjackets with four shots attempted in the match. Chase Carey (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) was tops in shots on goal with two on the day.

The Yellowjackets (2-4-1, 0-0-0 WIAC) will be out of action for week, next taking the field on Saturday, September 21 when they host UW-Platteville. Game time against the pre-season favorites in the WIAC is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

September 21 will also be the 3rd Annual Caps for Cancer day for the Yellowjackets. Fans are encouraged to bring new winter hats to the game. The hats will be donated to the Caring Ways Cancer Resource Center at the Essentia Health Cancer Center, who will then provide them to people in the Northland who are undergoing treatment of cancer. For more information on the event, please contact Yellowjacket Athletics at 715-395-4614.
