Spikers take two at St. Kate's

The Yellowjacket volleyball team swept their matches on Friday, taking down Hamline University and Loras College in the first day of the St. Kate's Invite in St. Paul, Minn.

Yellowjackets 3, Hamline 1

The Yellowjackets opened the tournament with a close match against Hamline, taking the first two sets by 25-20 and 25-23 scores. Hamline rallied in the third set, beating the Yellowjackets 25-20. Superior closed out the match with their most decisive set of the day, winning 25-18 in the fourth.

Alissa Autio (Floodwood, Minn./) had a good start to the weekend, leading the Yellowjackets with 12 kills. Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) added 11 kills and Brooke Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) had nine kills and a team-best .444 attack percentage. Zimmerman led the Yellowjackets in the opening match with two service aces and junior setter Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) had 35 assists.

On defense Deadrick led the Yellowjackets with 13 kills, while Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) had 10. Autio also added four blocks.

Yellowjackets 3, Loras 2

If the first match was tight, the second was even tighter, as the Yellowjackets went to five sets for the fifth time in their first ten matches. They improved their record to 4-1 in matches that go the distance by outlasting Loras College of Dubuque, Iowa 3-2.

Loras got the best of the Yellojackets in the opening set, but needed extra points to do it, winning 26-24. The Yellowjackets came roaring back, taking the next two sets 25-21 and 25-17. Loras evened the match by winning the fourth set 25-23. In the deciding set the Yellowjackets needed the extra point, but closed things out by taking the fifth 16-14.

The Yellowjackets struggled when attacking for most of the match, but got stronger when it counted most, posting a .292 attack percentage in the final set.

Autio again led the charge offensively, finishing the match with 20 kills. Tynen was the only other Yellowjacket in double figures, finishing with 11. Deadrick had 44 assists and six service aces, both team bests. On defense Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River) had the team lead with 22 digs. Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) contributed 12 digs while Deadrick and Zimmerman had 11 apiece.

The Yellowjackets (8-2, 0-0 WIAC) will take on Crown College at 9:00 a.m. and St. Catherine at 1:00 p.m. in day two of the tournament on Saturday.
