St. Kate's too much for Yellowjackets

The Yellowjacket women's soccer team was looking to put together back-to-back wins for the first time in 2013, but St. Catherine University had other ideas. On a rainy evening in the Twin Cities, the Wildcats scored twice in each half on their way to a 4-0 win over the Yellowjackets.

St. Catherine got on the board at 28:10 when Yellowjacket goalkeeper Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) was involved in a collision and the Yellowjackets scored an own goal to put the Wildcats up 1-0. Of bigger concern for the Yellowjackets was that Paige, who had made seven saves to that point, was injured and had to leave the game, being replaced in goal by Kalea Hatlewick (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls).

The Wildcats added a goal late in the first half when Nina Bukowski scored her first of the season with just 1:35 to play, making it 2-0.

In the second half Lensa Gurmessa, the top scorer for the Wildcats, scored her fourth goal of the season in the 79th minute to make it 3-0. Gurmessa also had an assist in the match. St. Catherine closed out the scoring in the final minute of the match when Julia Zyla scored her first career goal to make the final score 4-0.

Hatlewick finished the match with 11 saves on 14 shots in 61:50 of play. Paige played the other 28:10 and was tagged with the loss in the match, falling to 0-3-0 on the year.

For St. Catherine, Abbey Hinton made two saves in the match to earn her first win of the season.

Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) and Syna Graber (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) had the shots on goal for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (2-4-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) have a quick turnaround, as they return to action on Sunday, September 15 with a match at the University of Minnesota Morris. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
