Saturday's WIAC opener was a tough one for the Yellowjacket women's soccer team. Already having to face a tough opponent in UW-Platteville, the Yellowjackets were forced to play the match shorthanded, with several players out due to injury or illness.

The 13 players who appeared in the match for the Yellowjackets gave it everything they had, but ultimately came up short, falling 7-0 to the Pioneers in a matinee match-up at the Superior Soccer Complex.

Jessica Butler scored twice and added an assist in the match to lead Platteville, who also got a goal and two assists from Yamilex Jaramillo.

The Yellowjackets had the first quality scoring chance of the match in the sixth minute, but the shot from Taylor Piechocki (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc ) went wide of the mark. Moments later Butler scored her first of the game to make it 1-0. Jaramillo, on assists from Butler and Lindsey Harms scored in the 16th minute to stretch the lead to 2-0.

For the rest of the first half, the Yellowjackets held Platteville off the board, with Kalea Hatlewick (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) making five saves after the Pioneers took the two-goal lead.

After halftime the depth of the Pioneers began to wear the Yellowjackets down, and they capitalized.

Emily Ryan scored 4:20 into the half to make it a 3-0 game. Later, the Pioneers scored three goals in a span of 8:24 and the lead bulged to 6-0. Cassie Blatz scored the final goal of the match on a header in the 86th minute to make the final score 7-0.

Hatlewick was busy in goal for the Yellowjackets, making nine saves on 16 shots. At the other end, Jade Jandt, Mandy Taylor, and Katie Rash combined to make two saves for UW-Platteville.

Chelsea Cossin (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) and Lily Marcelius (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) had the shots on goal for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (3-6, 0-1 WIAC) will have a week to get some players healthy and back on the field. Their next action is on the road at UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, September 28. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
