Box Score

Yellowjackets 1, Bethel 0

The hallmark of most good teams is that they are able to find a way to win tight games. And for the Yellowjacket men's soccer team, that is how they've been winning games. Aside from a 3-0 blowout of Concordia College to open the season, the Yellowjackets have been winning games by the slimmest of margins, and that was the case again on Tuesday.

Despite handily outshooting the hosts from Bethel, the Yellowjackets again were able to muster just one goal, and again they were able to make it stand up in a 1-0 win over the Royals.

The victory is the third in the last four outings for the Yellowjackets and pulls them back to .500 for the season.

The Yellowjackets controlled the play for much of the first half, outshooting the Royals 9-4 in the opening frame and keeping anything from getting near starting goalkeeper Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong). The visitors held a 4-0 edge in shots on goal, but still went into halftime scoreless.

It was much the same story to start the second half as the Yellowjackets continued to press. Then in the 62nd minute, they finally broke through.

Ben Royce (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley), who led the Yellowjackets in goals a year ago, scored for the first time since the second game of the season, putting home an unassisted goal, his second of the year to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead.

From there the Yellowjacket defense took over. Bethel was able to generate some opportunities, but they weren't about to get anything past Elder, who finished the match with three saves. The junior goalkeeper notched his third shutout of the season on the day and hasn't been scored on in 199:22.

For the match the Yellowjackets attempted 22 shots, compared to nine for Bethel. Shots on goal in the match also favored the Yellowjackets 9-3. Royce and Brian Grand (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) combined to attempt 13 of the 22 shots in the match for the Yellowjackets. Royce led the way with four shots on goal while Grand had three. Alex Young (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) and Trevor LaRoche-Theune (LaPointe, Wis./Bayfield ) had one apiece.

Chris Scott started in goal for Bethel and finished with eight saves in the losing effort.

The Yellowjackets (4-4-1, 1-0-0 WIAC) will be on the road for a pair of matches this weekend, beginning with a WIAC tilt at UW-Oshkosh, part of a doubleheader that features the women's teams from each school squaring off at 4:30 p.m. The men will face-off at Titan Stadium is beginning at 7:00 p.m.
