Yellowjackets tie Oshkosh on rainy Saturday

Box Score

Yellowjackets 1, Oshkosh 1 (2 OT)

The UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team entered Saturday's match with the Yellowjackets unbeaten and with designs on a conference championship. The Yellowjackets, on the other hand, have a few losses to their credit but entered the match unbeaten in WIAC play.

And both teams left Titan Stadium on Saturday night with their unbeatens intact.

Despite a driving rain from start to finish, the Yellowjackets and Titans decided nothing through 110 minutes of play and the teams settled for a 1-1 double overtime draw.

The Titans entered the game 5-0-3 and ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division III, but it was the Yellowjackets who drew first blood.

In the 32nd minute Ben Royce (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) scored his third goal of the season to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead. Royce, the leading scorer for the Yellowjackets a year ago, found the back of the net for the second consecutive game.

The Yellowjackets made the goal stand up and went into halftime with the lead, despite Oshkosh outshooting them 14-6 in the half. Shots on goal in the first half also favored Oshkosh, 11-6.

Oshkosh evened the match in the 66th minute when Evan Krause scored.

For the second half the Yellowjackets closed the gap in shots on goal, trailing the Titans just 3-2. Each team also had one shot on goal in each of the overtime periods.

Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) had another strong match in goal for the Yellowjackets, finishing the day with 15 saves. At the other end Nick Barry made nine saves for the Titans.

The Yellowjackets (4-4-2, 1-0-1 WIAC) will play a non-conference at Ripon College on Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
