Box Score

Yellowjackets 2, Crown 0

Last weekend was a frustrating one for the Yellowjacket women's soccer team, one that saw them suffer a pair of season-opening losses on their home field. On Saturday afternoon at the Superior Soccer Complex, the Yellowjackets turned the tables and gave everyone something to cheer about on "Parents Day."

Controlling the pace and the play from start to finish, Crown College was no match for the home team on this day as the Yellowjackets picked up their first win of the season, 2-0 over the Storm.

A week ago the Yellowjackets struggled to generate offense, but that changed against the Storm, as the Yellowjackets attempted 25 shots to Crown's nine and outshot them 12-2 for the match.

The Yellowjackets got the eventual game winning goal in the 20th minute of the first half when junior team captain Chelsea Cossin (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) broke in with the ball down the right side, cut toward the goal and let a shot go that got past Crown goalkeeper Emily Kirby, but defender Aubrie Ades got a piece of the ball and deflected it into her own goal to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead. It was the first goal of the season for Cossin, the Yellowjackets' top scorer the past two seasons.

Early in the second half the Yellowjackets increased their lead when Lily Marcelius (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) got a feed on the right side and put a shot home for her first collegiate goal to make it 2-0. Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) got the assist on the play.

The Yellowjackets continued to press with the lead, but Kirby's goalkeeping kept things them at bay. Kirby finished the match with ten saves. At the other end the Yellowjackets played smothering defense and didn't give the Storm any legitimate scoring opportunities on the day.

Marcelius and Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) each had three shots on goal to lead the Yellowjackets. Cossin and Nichole Casler (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) each had two shots on goal.

Kalea Hatlewick (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets and made two saves in the first half. She gets credit for the victory and improves to 1-1-0 on the season. Hatlewick gave way to Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) who played the second half and didn't have to make a save.

The Yellowjackets (1-2-0) will now hit the road and play their next five games away from home, beginning with a non-conference match on Monday, September 9 when they will be in St. Paul, Minn. to take on Macalester College. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
