After Friday's win over Bethel the Yellowjacket men's hockey team put itself in a position to do something that it hasn't done all season long - sweep a weekend. Friday's game was the first time that they won a game on a Friday night in 2013-14 and wtih a victory on Saturday they would pick up back-to-back wins for just the second time this season.

The task would be much tougher than it was on Friday, however, as St. Thomas, ranked No. 11 in the nation entering the game, was a much more formidable opponent than Bethel.

They're going to have to wait another week for a chance to gain that elusive sweep.

St. Thomas scored a pair of first period goals and completely shut down the Yellowjacket offense in a 3-0 win at the St. Thomas Ice Arena on Saturday.

The Tommies opened the scoring at 6:37 of the opening period when Michael Dockery capitalized on a Yellowjacket turnover and beat Dayn Belfour (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate) from the right circle to make it 1-0. Four minutes later it went to 2-0 when Alex Niestrom blasted a shot from the right circle past Belfour.

In the second period the Yellowjackets took back-to-back penalties and the Tommies capitalized on the latter, as Tyler Gubb picked up a rebound at the foot of the goal crease and slid a backhand home to increase the lead to 3-0 with 2:05 to play in the period.

As the third period went on tempers began to flare and with under three minutes to play things escalated to the point where three players from each team ended up in the penalty box, the Yellowjackets getting their first power play in the process. Despite a couple of good scoring chance, they were unable to dent the St. Thomas defense and went down to defeat, being shut out for the second time on the season.

Belfour made 24 saves in the game, getting zero goal support for the second start in a row. He is now 2-5-0 on the season. At the other end St. Thomas goaltender Drew Fielding made 19 saves to pick up his fifth shutout of the year, which leads the country.

The Yellowjackets took six penalties for 15 minutes, while the Tommies took four penalties for 11 minutes. The Yellowjackets were scoreless on their one power play chance and were 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.

It was the final non-conference game of the season for the Yellowjackets, who will be in WIAC play the rest of the way. The ten-game final stretch gets underway on Friday, January 17 when the Yellowjackets host UW-Stout in their first home game in eight weeks.
