Heartbreaking loss for Yellowjackets

Stephanie Bandelin had double digit kills and digs Saturday.
Box Score

The Yellowjacket volleyball team might have started its playoff push last night with a big victory over UW-La Crosse, but it knew that Saturday's match was of equal importance. The Yellowjackets faced a Pioneer team that found itself in the same predicament as they were - mired near the bottom of the WIAC and in need of wins. Both teams have one win in conference and the winner today would be in better position to gain a WIAC playoff spot. Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets couldn't pull out a victory, despite charging out of the gates and building a two-set lead.

Platteville 3, Superior 2

Things weren't looking good for the Yellowjackets in the opening minutes of the first set. They fell behind 9-3 after a kill by Platteville's Jennifer Schmidt. But that changed when Superior went to work. Slowly but surely, they trimmed away the Pioneers' lead. They got the deficit down to three, 19-16, before they forced Platteville to succumb to their persistence. Superior tied the score at 19-19, after a three-point run ending in an attack error by Platteville's Merritt Johnson. Platteville regained the lead at 20-19, but it was short-lived. Superior scored six points in a row, thanks to three errors committed by the Pioneers. At this point in the season, a team will take points any way they can get them. Superior won the first set, 25-20.

The Yellowjackets played very well in the first set and it carried over into the second. Getting off to a fast start, the Yellowjackets built a 5-0 lead. Later in the match, the Yellowjackets would extend their lead to eight points, 20-12, on an attack error by the Pioneers. The second set was all Yellowjackets, and they closed it out on a Vicki Vinokur (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) kill, to earn the win 25-15, and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

The Yellowjackets were on the brink of victory and close to securing a very important WIAC win, but the Pioneers had a different idea. The Yellowjackets ran into a Pioneers' buzzsaw in the third set. Before Superior could blink, they were down 8-1. Then, the Pioneers lead began to mount. Before the fans knew it, the lead was 20-5 in favor of the Pioneers. They would go on to easily win the third set of the match, 25-11.

The Yellowjackets were still in prime victory position, leading the match 2-1.

In the fourth set, one team couldn't gain separation from the other for the first half of the set that saw 11 lead changes and 10. Unfortunately, the Pioneers were the team that made the move to take control of the set. With the score tied at 12, Platteville went on a 7-3 run to open up a 19-15 lead on Superior. Superior tried to battle back, but it wouldn't be enough as Platteville went on to win the fourth set by a score of 25-21.

And for the second day in a row, Superior was headed to a fifth set to determine the winner. Last night, they came away with the victory. Today, they weren't as fortunate. The Yellowjackets got down early, first 5-1, then 9-2, and were never able to recover. The lead the Pioneers built in the early going was too much for the Yellowjackets as they lost the set, 15-7, and the match 3-2.

Stephanie Bandelin (Esko, Minn./Esko) was stellar again for the Yellowjackets as she recorded 21 kills and 12 digs. Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) and Vinokur each had nine kills. Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) recorded 51 assists. Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) had 13 digs to lead the team while Jordan Olson (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids) added 10.

Platteville was paced by three players who recorded double-digit kills, led by Jennifer Schmidt with 16. Lindsey Decker had 22 digs to lead Platteville on defense while setters Allie Carter and Katie O'Malley had 27 and 24 assists, respectively.

With the loss, the Yellowjackets fall to 8-18 overall and 1-3 in the WIAC on the season. The Yellowjackets will look to rebound from this heartbreaking loss as they face UW-Stout on October 15 in Menominee, Wisconsin. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
