Yellowjackets settle for 2-2 draw with Northland

The UW-Superior women's soccer team jumped out to an early lead in their non-conference contest with the Northland College Lumberjills Tuesday afternoon.

Even as the Yellowjackets scored two quick goals in the opening half, Northland rallied back, scoring late in the first and midway through the second before holding off a furious overtime surge by UW-Superior on the way to a 2-2 draw in Ashland.

UW-Superior's offense piled up 29 shots on the afternoon and held a 19-11 edge in shots on goal for the contest. But an impressive effort from Northland goal tender Emily Romuald kept the Yellowjackets from coming away with the victory.

The Yellowjackets (3-9-2) got their offense going early against the Lumberjills, scoring just 3:32 into the contest when Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) netted her third marker of the season from Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) to give UW-Superior a 1-0 advantage.

UW-Superior's lead doubled at 17:12 when Coombs scored her second goal of the season unassisted for a 2-0 Yellowjacket edge.

Northland (6-7-1) rallied back to cut the deficit to 2-1 when Alexandra Ritchie scored from Sara Jeffers at the 32:57 mark of the opening half.

The Lumberjills completed the comeback at 71:02 as Heather Jensen scored unassisted to even matters at 2-2 and send the game into overtime.

UW-Superior controlled the majority of extra time, outshooting Northland by a combined total of 10-2 for the two overtime sessions. But Romuald remained firm in net, turning away five shots to preserve the 2-2 draw.

Coombs had a game-high nine shots for the Yellowjackets offensively while Adams pitched in with eight. Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) meanwhile made nine saves in goal to pick up her second career draw for UW-Superior.

Northland was led by Jensen with six shots. Romuald finished the afternoon with 17 saves for the Lumberjills.

The Yellowjackets return home for a WIAC Conference contest against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. Opening kick from Yellowjacket Field is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
