Pointers Pull Away From Yellowjackets

Through much of the first half of their contest with UW-Stevens Point Saturday, the UW-Superior women's soccer team remained within striking distance against a streaking Pointers outfit.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, UW-Stevens Points began to pull away in the second half, scoring three times on the way to posting a 5-0 victory in their WIAC Conference contest at Yellowjacket Field.

Employing a high defensive line throughout the first half, UW-Superior (3-10-2 overall, 0-5 WIAC) managed to frustrate the Pointers (7-7-1, 2-2-1) for most of the opening 45 minutes.

UW-Stevens Point forged ahead however at the 15:04 mark when Sarah Meylor placed a header over Yellowjacket net minder Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) for a 1-0 Pointers lead.

UW-Superior continued to stay close until late in the half when Mary-Kate Schiffer tallied from the near-side at 43:43 for a 2-0 UW-Stevens Point cushion heading into the intermission.

In the second half, Emily Dietrich's rebound goal at 64:58 made it 3-0 before additional markers from Delaney Boelter and Abbie Ullrich at 79:50 and 84:25 closed out the scoring.

For the game, UW-Stevens point held a 36-4 edge in shots, including a 25-1 advantage in shots on goal.

The Yellowjackets were paced offensively by Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) with two shots.  Henderson took the loss with 20 saves for the contest.

Meylor, Schiffer and Jillian Ross all had five shots for UW-Stevens Point while Morgan Voidt got the win in goal with one save on the afternoon.

The Yellowjackets close out the 2014 home schedule on Saturday when they host UW-Whitewater at Yellowjacket Field.  Opening kick against the Warhawks is scheduled for 12 noon.
