Macalester 1, Superior 0

Offense certainly hadn't been in short supply for the UW-Superior men's soccer team as they took the field to host Macalester in their regular-season, home finale against Macalester Saturday afternoon.

In their previous two games against UW-Whitewater and St. Scholastica, the Yellowjackets had netted six combined goals and hoped to do the same against a defensive-minded Scots team at Yellowjacket Field.

The Scots had different ideas however, getting a goal from Cole Erickson midway through the first half before shutting down the Yellowjackets defensively to post a 1-0 shutout victory.

UW-Superior dropped their second straight despite holding a 14-6 edge in shots for the game.

Neither team found much flow during a defensive first half that saw the two teams combine for plenty of midfield play and 11 fouls through 45 minutes.

Macalester (9-5-2) broke a scoreless tie at 26:01 when Erickson pounced on a loose-ball in the penalty area before redirecting a shot past Yellowjacket net minder Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) for a 1-0 Scots lead headed into the intermission.

The Yellowjackets (9-7-1) pushed hard for a potential tying goal in the second half, but could not solve Macalester goal tender Zeke Vainer, who made two saves in each half while directing a nearly flawless Scots' defense.

UW-Superior had their best offensive chances late in regulation, picking up three corner-kicks in the final 1:22 of the second half.  But each chance failed to produce any quality goal-scoring opportunities as Macalester held on for the shutout victory.

Brian Grand (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) notched a game-high six shots offensively for the Yellowjackets while Elder took the loss in goal before being relieved by Zach Harwerth (Anoka, Minn./Anoka).

Robert Tomecek paced Macalester with two shots for the afternoon.

The Yellowjackets travel to St. John's for a non-conference game on Tuesday. Opening kick against the Johnnies is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
