Titans Take Down Yellowjackets

Box Score

Oshkosh 3, Yellowjackets 0

UW-Superior and UW-Oshkosh participated in a Halloween edition of volleyball at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Friday night. However, things didn't go UW-Superior's way as UW-Oshkosh took the match in three sets. Superior had an opportunity to knock off a really good Oskhosh team that had been struggling as of late, but unfortunately the Yellowjackets, who have had some struggles of their own, couldn't find a way into the win column.

Despite it being Halloween, there was a good crowd on hand for a Friday night that witnessed some great effort put forth by Superior in the first set of the match. Superior seemed to play inspired and carefree volleyball for the majority of the first set. They got off to a quick 4-0 lead with Oshkosh looking like it was feeling that seven-hour bus trip. They would eventually catch up to Superior, however, knotting the score at 10-10. Oshkosh gained a 17-13 advantage before Superior made a late push to tie the set at 19-19. Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets couldn't get past even with the Titans as they dropped the first set 25-22.

As described in the opening, it wouldn't get any better for our Yellowjackets in the second set. They fell behind early, 7-2, but recovered from the tough start to tie the set at 7-7, scoring five points in a row. With the set tied at 8-8, Oshkosh would distance itself from Superior. They went on a 6-1 run to open up a 14-9 lead. Oshkosh would then widen that lead to 18-9 with four consecutive points. Oshkosh would go on to win the second set, fairly easily, 25-14.

Superior got off to a nice start in the third set, leading 6-3 in the early going. They held a 12-9 lead later in the match, but that would be the last lead they would hold. Oshkosh put their foot on the pedal and finished the set on a 16-6 run to overtake the Yellowjackets, 25-18 in the third set.

The Yellowjackets were led by Stephanie Bandelin (Esko, Minn./Esko), with 10 kills to lead the team in that category. Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) had 29 assists to add to her impressive season total of over 1,100 assists on the season. Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) led the team with nine digs.

Oshkosh was paced by two players in double-figures in kills (Katelyn Malcheski - 15 and Laura Trochinski - 12). Lexi Thiel had 26 assists to lead the Titans.

With the loss, Superior falls to 12-22 overall and 1-6 in the WIAC with one more match left on the schedule. While the playoffs aren't in their sights, they still have a chance to beat a very good UW-Whitewater team on Senior Day. The match is set for a 12 p.m. start tomorrow at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
