Lawrence holds on to defeat Yellowjackets, 2-1

With WIAC Tournament action fast approaching, the UW-Superior men's soccer team hoped their regular season finale against Lawrence would serve as a jump-start towards a strong postseason push.

The Vikings had other ideas however and used two first half tallies to down the Yellowjackets 2-1 on Saturday in Appleton.

With the loss, UW-Superior finishes the regular season with an overall record of 9-9-1 before heading into the conference tournament next week.  Lawrence meanwhile upped their mark to 4-11-3 with the victory.

Following more than 30 minutes of scoreless action, the Vikings broke through at 33:04 of the opening half when Cameron Pieper scored on assists from Robert Desotelle and Sodai Ishii for a 1-0 Lawrence advantage.

The Yellowjackets bounced back just 5:30 later when Aropo Ojulu (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) netted his first tally career tally, faking a feed from Chase Carey (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) before placing a shot past Vikings' net minder Joe Krivit to even matters 1-1 at the 38:34 mark.

Lawrence took the lead for good just before the intermission when Santiago Alvarez converted on a feed from Desotelle and Erik Soderlund at 42:18 for a 2-1 Vikings edge at halftime.

UW-Superior attempted to rally back in the second half, holding a 3-2 edge in shots during the final 45 minutes of action. But the Lawrence defense held firm behind Krivit, who stopped three shots in picking up the win.

The Yellowjackets were paced offensively by Gio Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos), who finished with four shots on the afternoon. Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) took the loss for UW-Superior in goal with four saves.

Lawrence was led by Pieper with two shots for the game.

Both teams finished with eight shots while the Vikings had a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The Yellowjackets kick-off postseason play on Wednesday in the semifinal round of the WIAC Tournament against either UW-Oshkosh or UW-Whitewater.
