Maggie Cragg
Box Score
Gustavus 3, Yellowjackets 1

After opening the season with a sweep over Augsburg College, the Yellowjackets turned around and went to work against Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday, Nov. 4.  Knowing the tradition and year-to-year success that embodies the Gusties, a big statement game is possibly on the docket for the Yellowjackets.  However, no one will know how big of a game this really is until things play out towards the end of the season.   For the Gusties, this is the first game of the season and an opportunity to show the country that they're a force to be reckon with yet again.  They did just that with a 3-1 season-opening victory against the Yellowjackets.

The Gusties doubled up the Yellowjackets in shots 10-5 in the first period while both teams were scoreless.  The second period was back-and-forth with both teams producing 12 shots, but it was the Gusties who capitalized on two Yellowjacket penalties.

Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) was charged with a roughing call at 12:44 of the second period to give the Gusties a power play opportunity.  Carolyn Draayer capitalized on the player advantage at 13:09 of the second period to give the Gusties a 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets found themselves in a hole again when Caitlyn Hunt (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) was called for interference at 16:13 of the second period.  The Gusties capitalized once again when Katie Aney slipped a shot past Yellowjacket goaltender Megan Leikkari (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I) to make the score 2-0 at 17:31 of the second period.

The Yellowjackets played up and down hockey throughout the course of the third period, but it was the Gusties who capitalized with a shot to the back of the net.  This time it was Erica Power firing a shot past Leikkari at 16:44 of the third period to extend the Gustie lead to 3-0.

Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) helped the Yellowjackets avoid a shutout at 18:12 of the third period with a goal to narrow the Gustie lead to 3-1.  Heid and Olmstead were awarded assists on the play.

Special teams proved to be the nail in the coffin as the Gusties were 2-5 while the Yellowjackets finished 0-2.

Leikkari made 26 saves for the Yellowjackets while Lindsey Hibbard stopped 29 shots for the Gusties.

The Yellowjackets (2-1-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) will return to action on Friday, Nov. 7 where they'll hit the road to Winona, Minn. to take on St. Mary's University.  Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
