Yellowjackets 3, Saint Mary's 2 (OT)

In their final tune-up weekend before they embark on the gauntlet that is the WIAC, the Yellowjackets are looking to capitalize against MIAC foe St. Mary's University.  The Yellowjackets faced a fresh set of legs for the second game in a row as this was the first contest of the season for the Cardinals.  It didn't work in the Yellowjackets' favor the first time around when they fell 3-1 to Gustavus Adolphus College.   Friday night proved to be a different story as the Yellowjackets defeated the Cardinals 3-2 in overtime.

The Cardinals kicked off their 2014-15 season with a bang when Kayla Pierson snuck a shot past Yellowjacket goaltender Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate) at 2:51 of the first period to make the score 1-0.

It didn't stay that way for long when Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) won a faceoff that found it's way to Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba)'s stick.  Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) immediately fired a shot to the back of the net at 4:32 of the first period to tie the game 1-1.

The penalty kill struggles carried over from Tuesday night in the second period for the Yellowjackets.  A hooking penalty on Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) gave the Cardinals a power play opportunity at 8:18 of the second period.  Molly Abraham capitalized for the Cardinals on the power play with a goal at 10:08 to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

The Yellowjackets found themselves in a hole once again when Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba) was called for tripping at 11:03 of the second period.  However, the Yellowjackets put their special teams struggles to bed when Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) tallied a short-handed goal at 12:21 of the second period to tie the game 2-2.

It was the Yellowjackets coming up with magic in overtime when Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) set up Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) with a perfect pass from behind the net.  Larson would capitalize in front of the net at 2:35 in overtime to give the Yellowjackets a 3-2 victory.

Kobar made 20 saves in net for the Yellowjackets while Marah Shields stopped 34 shots for the Cardinals.

The Yellowjackets (3-1-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) will look to sweep St. Mary's University tomorrow, Nov. 8 in Winona, Minn.  Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
