Yellowjackets sweep Cardinals

Box Score

Yellowjacket 5, Saint Mary's 1

Adversity was the name of today's contest vs. St. Mary's University.  Going into the weekend with a #9 ranking in Division III, the Yellowjackets continued to show that they deserve to stay in the top ten despite Tuesday night's loss to Gustavus Adolphus.  The Yellowjackets overcame adversity this afternoon, scoring five unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 victory over St. Mary's University.

The Yellowjackets found themselves in a hole when Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba) took a hooking penalty at 8:25 of the first period.  The Yellowjackets proved to be unsuccessful on the penalty kill this season and that continued on Saturday when Jesse Cwik gave St. Mary's a 1-0 lead on a power play goal at 8:33 of the first period.

That's all well and good because the Yellowjackets competed like a top ten team for the rest of the game, scoring five unanswered goals.  Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba)'s heroics carried over from last night when she tied the game 1-1 at 16:08 of the first period.

The Yellowjackets exploded for a three goal second period.  Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) set the tempo when she gave the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead at 6:07 of the second period.  Coey also had a hand in the Yellowjackets next goal when she dished out an assist on Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary)'s goal to make the score 3-1 at 11:49 of the second period.

Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) extended the Yellowjacket lead to 4-1 with a goal at 13:52 of the second period.  The dynamic freshman duo of Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) and Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) both had an assist in the play.

Goodin continued to pour salt on the Cardinals' wound in the third period when she took a pass from Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) and fired a shot to the back of the net to make the score 5-1.  The time of Goodin's goal came at 14:06 of the third period.

Goodin and Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) led the Yellowjackets offensively with a goal and a pair of assists in the contest.

Megan Leikkari (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I) registered the win in net for the Yellowjackets, making 23 saves.  Her counterpart Tori Herrmann stopped 29 shots for the Cardinals.

The Yellowjackets (4-1-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) will start WIAC action at Wessman Arena on Friday, Nov. 14 when they face UW-Eau Claire.  Game time is at 3:00 p.m.
