Yellowjackets Routed by Marian

Anton Svensson scored his second of the season in the first period Friday.
Box Score

Marian 5, Yellowjackets 2

With the holiday break looming the Yellowjackets had a lot on the line heading into Friday's non-conference tilt with Marian. First the team wanted to get back to playing sound hockey at both ends of the rink. Second they wanted to bring an end to their brief two-game losing streak. Finally they wanted to get back in the win column, and with that build some much-needed momentum as the season prepares for its nearly month-long hiatus.

Unfortunately, all of those items are still on the table after Friday.

Marian scored early, and often, cruising to a 5-2 win over the Yellowjackets before a sparse crowd at the Blue Line Ice Center Friday.

The Yellowjackets had the first good scoring chance of the game but were unable to convert. Going back the other way Marian had a good chance of their own, and they did hit paydirt. Jacob Ryd took a pass from behind the Yellowjacket net in the left circle, and his shot beat Yellowjacket goaltender Cory Simons (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) between the pads to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead just 38 seconds into the contest.

Later in the frame the Yellowjackets tied the game, as Anton Svensson (Soldertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) took a perfect pass from Jake Johnson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) will driving the Marian zone. He faked to his forehand before pulling the puck to his backhand and then lifted a shot over the shoulder of Marian goaltender Mike Baldwin into the top of the net for his second of the year, tying the game. The power play goal came at 9:57.

Just as quickly as the Yellowjackets drew even, Marian regained the lead. RJay Berra took a shot from the left point that was tipped out front by Brodie Jamieson, giving Marian a 2-1 lead on the power play at 14:26. A few minutes later the Yellowjackets turned the puck over behind their net and Jamieson centered to Berra, whose wrist shot beat Simons high on the glove side at 17:30 to make it 3-1. The goal, Berra's third of the year, spelled the end of the night for Simons, who surrendered three goals on 15 shots. He was replaced by Zach Thompson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld).

The Yellowjackets got back in rhythm early in the second period, but again were unable to convert their early chances. Later in the period Marian extended its lead when a shot from Derek Perl at the right point was stopped by Zach Thompson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld). Thompson knocked the rebound up in the air with his blocker and the buck went over his shoulder where Derek Thorogood batted it out of the air to make it 4-1 at 10:01 of the period. Minutes later Berra scored his second to make it 5-1, wiring a wrist shot from the top of the left circle over the Thompson's glove.

Marian ran a more conservative forecheck in the third period, limiting the number of opportunities they had. The best chances of the period went the way of the Yellowjackets, and they were able to score one more before the end of the period. Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) drove the puck into Marian territory on the right, then cut all the way to the left before making a perfect pass to Brandon Anderson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) in the slot. Anderson's wrist shot beat Baldwin low on the glove side for his third of the year, making it 5-2 with 4:05 to play. Luke Karakas (Green Bay, Wis./East) also assisted on the play, giving him his first point as a Yellowjacket.

After the goal the Yellowjackets were energized, playing their most inspired hockey of the night, but it was too little, too late and Marian closed out the win.

Special teams were not kind to the Yellowjackets for the second game in a row, as they went 1-for-3 on the power play and 1-of-2 on the penalty kill. Marian took three penalties for six minutes, while the Yellowjackets took two for four minutes.

Baldwin got the win in net for Marian, finishing the night with 27 saves. At the other end, Simons made 12 stops in 17:30 of playing time before giving way to Thompson who finished with 17 saves.

The Yellowjackets (5-7-0, 0-2-0 WIAC) will close out the 2014 portion of their schedule when they face the Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. The game can be heard live locally on 91.3 FM, with Jon Garver on the call.
