#7 UW-River Falls take down Yellowjackets

Lynne Larson
Box Score
UW-River Falls 6, Yellowjackets 2

After an emotional weekend split with UW-Stevens Point at Wessman Arena two weeks ago, the Yellowjackets were on their way of proving the Division III world wrong and showing they can defeat ranked opponents.  However, the Yellowjackets had to build on that at #7 UW-River Falls.  The Falcons came into the contest with a 7-2 record this season, with their only losses coming at the hands of UW-Stevens Point and Bethel University.  The Yellowjackets saw their fare share of struggles against the Falcons last season when they finished with a 0-3-1 mark against them.  Those struggles carried over into tonight as the Yellowjackets fell 6-2 to the Falcons.

The Yellowjackets had plenty of opportunities to take control of the game in the first period, but the bounces didn't go the Yellowjackets' way despite a power play opportunity.  One bounce went the Falcon's way at 15:04 of the first period after they put together a string of shots on Yellowjacket goaltender Megan Leikkari (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I).  It was Dani Sibley who put a shot to the back of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

An offensive storm broke in the second period for both teams and success on the power play was a factor.  After the Yellowjackets killed a Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) slashing penalty at 9:37 of the second period, the Yellowjackets found momentum.  Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) set that momentum with a goal at 10:27 of the second period to tie the game 1-1.

A Pamela McLeod (Gillam, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall Prep) roughing penalty at 12:01 of the second period doomed the Yellowjackets when Sibley notched a power play goal to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.  The time of the goal came at 13:10 of the second period.

As much as Sibley helped the Falcons thus far, she also put them in a hole with a tripping penalty at 15:15 of the second period.  Olmstead capitalized on her mistake with a power play goal at 15:20 of the second period to tie the game 2-2.

The Falcons went on to notch a pair of goals to close out the second period.  Carly Moran did the honors with a goal at 16:14 of the second period to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead.  Chloe Kinsel put the scoring to rest in the second period with a goal at 19:11 to extend the Falcon lead to 4-2.

The Falcons had no problem picking up where they left off in the third period and Alice Cranston was a big reason why.  She dug the Yellowjacket wound deeper with a goal at 2:56 of the third period to make the score 5-2.

Things didn't get better for the Yellowjackets when Karleigh Wolkerstorfer notched a goal to extend the Falcon lead to 6-2 at 11:53 of the third period.

Leikkari made 31 saves in net for the Yellowjackets while Angie Hall stopped 19 shots for the Falcons.

The Yellowjackets (7-3, 3-2 WIAC) will look to split with the Falcons tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 5 at Wessman Arena.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
