Box Score

River Falls 4, Yellowjackets 1

The streak is over.

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was on one of the most historic runs in school history of late, having won seven games in a row and going unbeaten in their last 11. The streak began following a loss to UW-River Falls at Wessman Arena on December 6. And it was also the Falcons who brought the streak to a halt.

River Falls scored three times in the second period on Saturday on its way to a 4-1 win over the Yellowjackets at Wessman Arena, just the third loss on the season for UW-Superior.

The Yellowjackets opened the scoring on the power play in the first period. Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) moved the puck from the left circle to the blue line and Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) made no mistake, firing a shot up high past Falcon goaltender Ashley Kuechle to give the home team the 1-0 lead. The seventh goal of the season for Mayhew came at 12:14 of the period. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/) also picked up an assist on the play.

It stayed that way until 11:14 of the second period when Emily Stark pushed a loose puck past Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was the first one allowed by the Yellowjackets in more than five games, ending a shutout streak that spanned 301:57.

River Falls jumped ahead a short time later when Chloe Kinsel weaved through the Yellowjacket defense and scored at 13:03 to make it 2-1. Then, with Hayley Epema (Crookston, Minn./Crookston) serving a roughing minor, Kinsel scored again and the lead bulged to two. The Falcons closed out the scoring at 14:58 of the third period when Dani Sibley beat Peters to make the final score 4-1.

Despite allowing four goals Peters had a strong game in net, finishing wtih 37 saves. Her record for the year now stands at 13-3-4. At the other end Kuechle finished the game 25 stops to earn the win for the Falcons.

River Falls took five penalties for 10 minutes, while the Yellowjackets took four for eight minutes. On the power play the Yellowjackets went 1-for-4 and the Falcons were 1-for-5.

The Yellowjackets (14-3-4, 4-3-2 WIAC) will get a chance to exact revenge on the Falcons their next time out, as the teams will meet at W.H. Hunt Arena in River Falls on Saturday, February 8. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
