Yellowjackets beat Stout, clinch home ice

Michael Rey scored twice for the Yellowjackets in Friday's 3-2 win over UW-Stout.
Box Score

Yellowjackets 3, Stout 2

For much of the second half of the season, the Yellowjacket men's hockey team has relied on the offensive prowess of Michael Rey (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Garden City Collegiate) and Pat Dalbec (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) to generate goals. On Friday night, in the most critical game of the season so far, the top-forward duo came through again when the team needed them.

Rey scored twice, one of them assisted by Dalbec as the Yellowjackets defeated UW-Stout, 3-2 at Dunn County Arena in Menomonie on Friday night.

With the win, the Yellowjackets jumped into a tie for fourth place in the WIAC standings, but by way of winning the season series, they earn the fourth seed and will host the Blue Devils in the first round of the WIAC playoffs on Tuesday, February 25 at Wessman Arena.

The action was fast-paced and end-to-end in the early going, with each team relying on its respective goaltender to come through in the clutch.

Despite the goaltending, the Yellowjackets were able to break through first. Rey had the puck in the left circle and carried to the middle of the ice, releasing a low shot that caromed off skates and past Stouts' goaltender Corey Koop to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead. For Rey, it was his 11th of the year. The unassisted goal came at 9:36.

Stout scored the lone goal of the second period to draw even when Riley Colvard took a shot from the blue line that was stopped, but Hunter Scott was there to the right of the goal to poke home the rebound to even the game.

The Yellowjackets regained the lead for good just 17 seconds into the third period. Dalbec fired a shot from the right side that was stopped by Koop, but Rey was to the left of the goal and he slid the rebound home to push the Yellowjackets back in front. Andy Singerhouse (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray) also had an assist on the goal.

As the period neared its mid-point the Yellowjackets went up by two. Anton Svensson (Soldertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) circled the Stout goal and came out the right side. He attempted to center a pass that hit a skate and got past Koop for his second of the year to push the lead to 3-1. For Svensson, it was his second goal of the season. Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate Institute) and Cody Hotchkin (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) assisted on the goal at 9:09 of the third.

The Yellowjackets continued to press but were unable jump ahead by three. Then in the final minute David Dalbec (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) was called for a penalty and the Blue Devils converted on the power play. With five seconds left, Kevin O'Donnell won a face-off and Logan Maly shot from the top of the right circle and beat Dayn Belfour (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate) high on the glove side to cut the lead to 3-2 with 3.1 seconds left.

Rey closed out the game for the Yellowjackets by winning the final face-off and assuring the Yellowjackets of the victory.

Belfour was spectacular at times in goal, playing one of his best games of the season. He finished with 32 saves to improve his record to 4-5-1 on the year. At the other end Koop made 34 saves.

It was a clean game between the two clubs, with a total of four penalties called on the night. The Yellowjackets took three penalties for six minutes, while the Blue Devils took just one for two minutes. On the power play the Yellowjackets went 0-for-1, while Stout was 1-for-3.

The Yellowjackets (8-13-3, 3-6-2 WIAC) will close out the 2013-14 regular season when they host UW-Stevens Point on Saturday night. Game time from Wessman Arena is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live on 91.3 FM KUWS, beginning with the pre-game show following Yellowjacket basketball.
