Lynne Larson scored her fifth of the year on Saturday at River Falls.
Box Score

River Falls 3, Yellowjackets 2

Every team, it seems, has that one opponent that they just can't get over the hump against. For the 2013-14 edition of the Yellowjacket women's hockey team, that nemesis is UW-River Falls. On the year the Yellowjackets have only lost four games, but three of them have come at the hands of the Falcons.

On Saturday the Yellowjackets had a lead after 20 minutes, but the Falcons added single goals in the second and third periods to earn the 3-2 win at W.H. Hunt Arena in River Falls.

The Falcons have now won three of the four meetings between the teams in the regular season and own a four-point lead in the WIAC standings.

River Falls' Dani Sibley opened the scoring in the game, scoring her third goal of the season just 3:37 to stake the Falcons to the 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets answered, however, with a pair of goals before the opening frame was done. At 13:30 Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) netted her eighth of the season on assists from Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) and Pamela McLeod (Gillam, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall Prep) to tie the game. Just over three minutes later the Yellowjackets took the lead, as Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/) finished off a set up from Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) and Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) for her fifth of the year to make it 2-1 Yellowjackets at 16:38.

In the second period the tied the game at the 4:30 mark. Sam Greeley picked up her second of the year, on the power play, at 4:30 and it was 2-2.

River Falls scored the game winner at 13:41 of the third period. Kendal Evenson scored her first goal of the season and the Falcons had their second lead of the game at 3-2.

In the final minute the Yellowjackets pulled goaltender Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) in favor of the extra attacker, but they couldn't net the equalizer and they dropped their second game in a row.

Peters finished the game with 33 saves in the losing effort. Her record now stands at 13-4-4 on the year. Ashley Kuechle got the win for River Falls, making 23 saves.

River Falls took just three penalties for six minutes, while the Yellowjackets took eight for 27 minutes. On the power play the Yellowjackets went 0-for-2 while the Falcons went 1-for-6.

The Yellowjackets (14-4-4, 4-4-2 WIAC) return home on Friday, February 14 when they host UW-Stevens Point at Wessman Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
