Grand's overtime goal propels Yellowjackets past Augsburg

For the second time in less than three days, the UW-Superior men's soccer team found themselves headed to extra time against a determined foe Thursday afternoon. Fortunately for the Yellowjackets, they also managed to find a way to win under those circumstances for the second consecutive time.

After surrendering a game-tying goal in the last two minutes of regulation, a dramatic goal by Brian Grand (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) at 100:07 of overtime gave UW-Superior a 2-1 win over Augsburg at Yellowjacket Field.

With the victory, the Yellowjackets improved to 5-2 on the season and gave themselves some valuable momentum heading into Saturday's key matchup with highly-ranked Luther. The Auggies meanwhile dropped to 2-5-1 with the loss.

Following a scoreless first-half in which UW-Superior held a 6-4 edge in shots, the Yellowjackets took the lead at 59:21 when Gio Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos) took a feed from Grand and skillfully roofed a shot over the arms of Augsburg keeper Nick Lenertz for a 1-0 edge.

The Auggies responded with less-than two minutes remaining when Scott Clinton's corner-kick resulted in a tally for Jeremiah Strand at the right post, evening matters 1-1 with just 1:04 left in regulation.

The game remained deadlocked through the remainder of regulation and the first 10 minutes of overtime.

UW-Superior finally scored the game-winner with just over nine minutes left however when freshman Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) found Grand on the left side. Grand's resulting diving-header beat Lenertz to the far-post, allowing the Yellowjackets to claim a 2-1 victory.

For the game, UW-Superior held a 17-13 edge in shots, including a 5-4 margin in shots on goal.

Rodriguez and Grand each had four shots for the Yellowjackets while Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) picked up the win in goal with three saves for UW-Superior.

Augsburg was Ben Henry and Bobby Kohl with three shots apiece. Lenertz took the loss for the Auggies, stopping three shots.

UW-Superior hosts the Norse at Yellowjacket Field Saturday. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
