Box Score

Superior 2, Hamline 0

Coming off a last-second loss to Luther on Saturday, the UW-Superior men's soccer team entered their non-conference contest with Hamline hoping to gain some momentum with WIAC action set to begin this weekend.

The Yellowjackets came through in fine fashion, scoring twice in the second half to shutout the Pipers 2-0 Wednesday afternoon in St. Paul.
Gio Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos) and Reyman Solis (Kirkland, Ill./Huntley) scored for UW-Superior, which held a 22-8 edge in shots on the way to upping their record to 6-3 with the victory.

The Yellowjackets controlled action through most the first half, racking up a 9-3 edge in shots through the opening 45 minutes.  Hamline managed to keep the game scoreless however thanks to four first-half saves from starting goal tender Jonas Warlich.

All that changed at 59:17 as Rodriguez scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season on an assist from Chase Carey (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) for a 1-0 UW-Superior lead.

The Yellowjackets continued to press for the remainder of the second half, eventually doubling their lead with 11:34 left in regulation when Solis netted his first-career tally for UW-Superior on a helper from Joey Gustafson (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) for a 2-0 edge.

From there, UW-Superior tightened up defensively, holding a 13-5 edge in shots in the second half on the way to claiming the victory.

Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) got the win in goal for the Yellowjackets, making one save to post his first shutout of the season. Solis had four of UW-Superior's 22 shots for the game while Gustafson and Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) each had three shots.

Warlich took the loss for Hamline (3-5-1) with eight saves while Abbai Habte led the Piper offense with three shots in the contest.

The Yellowjackets continue their current road-swing when they head to UW-Platteville for their WIAC Conference opener on Saturday.  Opening kick against the Pioneers is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
