Saint Mary's 7, Yellowjackets 0

It didn't take the St. Mary's Cardinals long to assume control of their nonconference contest with the UW-Superior women's soccer team Saturday afternoon.

Scoring their first goal less than 10 minutes into the game, the Cardinals went on to add four more in the opening half on the way to claiming a 7-0 victory over the Yellowjackets at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

UW-Superior was outshot 24-7 for the game on the way to falling to 0-3.  St. Mary's meanwhile improved to 2-1 behind three goals from Emma Schaefer and two more from Emily Loof.

Schaefer got the scoring started the scoring at 9:50, weaving her way through traffic before placing a right-footed shot underneath UW-Superior goal tender Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) for an early 1-0 cushion.

The Cardinals doubled the lead at 23:27 as Loof found open space on the left-hand side and fired a shot into the side netting for a 2-0 edge with less than 22 minutes remaining in the first half.

Schaefer and Loof each scored again at 30:10 and 39:37 respectively to make it a 4-0 lead before Jesse Cwik closed out the first half with a tally in the final minute for a 5-0 Cardinals' edge at intermission.

Schaefer completed the hat-trick at 51:58 on a penalty kick while Anna Taylor scored with 9:39 remaining in regulation to complete the scoring.

Henderson finished with seven saves for the Yellowjackets while Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) paced the offensive attack with three shots.

Miranda Halling made one save in net for St. Mary's to pick up her second win of the season.

UW-Superior (0-3, 0-0 WIAC) will host UM-Morris at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex on Sunday.  Opening kickoff between the Yellowjackets and the Cougars is scheduled for 2 p.m.
