Yellowjackets Top Bethel, Earn Split

Box Score

Yellowjackets 4, Bethel 1

After Friday's loss to Bethel on the road, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team came into Saturday's game depleted - energy depleted because they were playing their fourth game in six days, and personnel depleted because the team is currently enduring a rash of injuries to several key players on the roster.

No matter.

The Yellowjackets scored the first three goals of the hockey game and fought off a strong third period by Bethel to earn a 4-1 win and a split of the weekend series Saturday afternoon at Wessman Arena.

After giving the Royals numerous opportunities in the early stages of the first period the Yellowjackets regrouped and began applying pressure. At 16:07 they broke through when Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) took a pass in the left circle from Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) and sent a wrist shot into the top right corner for her team-leading 10th goal of the season and a 1-0 Yellowjacket lead. Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) also earned an assist.

In the second period the Yellowjackets stretched the lead to 2-0 on a fortunate bounce early. Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) had the puck on the right board and just threw the puck on goal before heading off for a line change. The puck was mishandled by Bethel goaltender Maggie Straka and ended up in the net just 1:33 into the period. Cragg's third goal of the year was unassisted.

Before the second period ended it went to 3-0. Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) leaned into a shot from the right circle that hit the goal post, but Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) was on the doorstep and poked home the rebound for her fourth of the year. Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) also assisted on the goal at 12:34 of the period.

Bethel scored its only goal of the game at 16:49 of the second. Kathryn Larson took the initial shot that was stopped, but Lauren Kolak picked up the rebound and scored to cut the Yellowjacket lead to two at 3-1.

The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring at 15:13 of the third period. With assists from Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) and Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba), Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) got the puck between the circles and took a wrist shot that beat Straka up high for her fifth of the year, making the final score 4-1.

Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate) got the start in goal once again for the Yellowjackets, and she earned the win, finishing the game with 31 saves. She is now 6-2-0 on the year. At the other end Straka finished with 25 saves in the losing cause for Bethel.

For the game the Yellowjackets took five penalties for ten minutes, while Bethel took just two for four minutes. Both teams were scoreless on the power play.

The Yellowjackets (12-5-0, 3-3-0 WIAC) don't get much time to rest, as they return to action Tuesday, January 13 when they travel to Duluth to take on St. Scholastica. Game time from Mars-Lakeview Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
