Box Score

Yellowjackets 7, Eau Claire 2

The Yellowjacket women's hockey kicked off 2015 by going 4-1 over an eight-day stretch. Following a much-deserved break 10-day break, the Yellowjackets returned to the ice Friday night, hitting the road for a conference tilt with UW-Eau Claire. The Yellowjackets have had the Blugolds' number this season, winning the two earlier meetings between the teams by a combined score of 9-5. Friday night the Yellowjackets continued their mastery of the Blugolds, and nearly equalled their goal output of the first two games combined.

Scoring three times in each of the second and third periods, the Yellowjackets scored seven times total and rolled to a 7-2 win at the Hobbs Ice Center.

The Yellowjackets dominated play in the early going and owned a shot advantage of 18-1 in the first period, but they weren't able to solve goaltender Paige Turner until late in the frame. With just 1:06 on the clock Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) scored her seventh of the season to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead. Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) had the lone assist.

In the second period the Yellowjackets struck again early, this time Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) potted her seventh of the year, finish off a play set up by Leah Elledge (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park) and Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) to make it a 2-0 game. The goal came at 4:45.

Less than two minutes later the Blugolds got on the board as Ashley Baugher scored at 6:11 to cut the lead in half, 2-1.

It didn't take long for the Yellowjackets to get the two-goal lead back, however. Just over a minute later at 7:16 Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) scored her ninth of the year to push the lead to 3-1. Adair and Elledge assisted. Shortly after Larson's goal the Blugolds again cut the lead to one, this time getting an unassisted goal by Paige Dale at 10:08 to make it 3-2.

It didn't stay a one-goal game long, though, as the Yellowjackets scored off the ensuing faceoff. After winning the draw the Yellowjackets immediately attacked and De Kezel netted her second of the game just 23 seconds later and the Yellowjackets moved ahead 4-2.

The score stayed that way until 4:13 of the third period when Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) scored her second of the game, this one coming on the power play, to make it 5-2. At 14:35 of the third period the lead bulged to 6-2 as De Kezel finished off the hat trick, getting assists from Schultz and Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) for her third goal of the game and ninth of the season. In the final minute of the game Schultz got in on the act, scoring her ninth of the year on an assist from Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) to make the final score 7-2.

Several Yellowjackets had big nights offensively. De Kezel (three goals), Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) (two goals, one assist), Schultz (one goal, two assists) and Heid (three assists) all had three-point games. Seven Yellowjackets had multi-point games.

Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate) got the start in goal and earned the win, making 13 saves. Her record on the year improves to 8-2-0 on the year. At the other end Turner was much busier, stopping 47 shots for the Blugolds. She gave way to Kim Van Brunt in the final minute, who made one save.

The referees were busy in this one. UW-Eau Claire took seven penalties for 14 minutes, while the Yellowjackets took five for ten minutes. The Yellowjackets went 2-for-6 on the power play and killed off 4-of-5 power play chances for Eau Claire.

The Yellowjackets (14-5-0, 4-3-0 WIAC) return home Saturday afternoon for the second game of the weekend set with the Blugolds. It's "Senior Day" and the Yellowjackets will honor the four seniors on this year's roster. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 3:00 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the iFan Sports Network.
