Bethel Snaps Yellowjacket Winning Streak

Mikayla Goodin scored the lone goal of the game Friday for the Yellowjackets.
Box Score

Bethel 3, Yellowjackets 1

Friday is the midpoint of a busy eight-day stretch for the Yellowjacket women's hockey team. The week started with a two-game series with Finlandia. The Yellowjackets took both games from the Lions on home ice, and put 141 shots on goal in the two wins. Next week they will play a game on the road against Twin Ports rival St. Scholastica. In between there is a weekend home-and-home series with Bethel. The front end of that two-game set came Friday, as the teams met in the Twin Cities, and once again the Yellowjackets outshot their opponents while keeping the number of shots allowed to a respectable number.

This time, however, the goals didn't come for the Yellowjackets, and despite holding Bethel to just 15 shots, it was the Royals who emerged triumphant.

A pair of goals early in the third period gave Bethel an insurmountable lead, and they held on to defeat the Yellowjackets 3-1 at the Schwann's Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota.

The loss was the first in 2015 for the Yellowjackets and snapped the team's winning streak at four games.

After a scoreless first period Bethel opened the scoring at 13:58 of the second period. Lindsay Burman scored her sixth of the season, converting on a power play to make it a 1-0 game. Early in the third period Lauren Kolak scored to make it 2-0, netting her second of the season at 4:29. Less than three minutes later Bethel scored again, as Kathryn Larson scored her eighth of the season at 6:54 of the third period to push the lead to 3-0.

The Yellowjackets were finally able to break through late in the period. With just 2:41 remaining Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover), with assists from Kelly Cockerill (Selkirk, Manitoba/Oak Park) and Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary), potted her sixth goal of the season to cut the lead to two at 3-1.

In the final minute of play the Yellowjackets pulled the goaltender for an extra attacker, but they were unable to draw themselves any closer.

Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate), making her third start in a row for the Yellowjackets took the loss, and her record for the year now stands at 5-2-0. She finished the game with 12 saves. At the other end Maggie Straka got the win for Bethel, stopping 21-of-22 Yellowjacket attempts.

For the game the Yellowjackets took six penalties for 12 minutes, while Bethel took five penalties for ten minutes. On the power play Bethel went 1-for-6 while the Yellowjackets were scoreless in five opportunities.

The Yellowjackets (11-5-0, 3-3-0 WIAC) and Bethel will play the second game of their series Saturday afternoon. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 3:00 p.m.
