Box Score Yellowjackets 3, Minnesota Morris 0 The Yellowjacket men's soccer team was looking to get back on track after their four game winning streak was broken last Sunday at the hands of Saint John's University. The Yellowjackets welcomed the Minnesota Morris Cougars to the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon. This was the first time the two teams had faced each other since 2012, a match the Cougars won 1-0.
The Yellowjackets were determined not to let history repeat itself, as they came out very aggressively. The officials felt that
James Menzies (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) was a bit too aggressive, giving him a yellowcard just 2:49 into the match.
This had no effect on the aggressive nature of the Yellowjackets, as they had the first two shots on goal, before their first scoring opportunity presented itself.
Trevor Laroche-Theune (LaPointe, Wis./Bayfield ) had an opening for a shot, but a Cougar defender shoved him down inside the box to give the Yellowjackets a penalty kick opportunity at 13:50.
Joey Gustafson (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) was called on to take the shot, but Morris goalkeeper Cody Christ read the shot perfectly as he made the save.
Less than five minutes after the penalty kick, the Yellowjackets made it 1-0 on Laroche-Theune's fifth goal of the season. Laroche-Theune took
Erik Boese (New Berlin, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)'s feed to put a left footed shot in the bottom right corner, just out of the reach of the Morris goalkeeper.
The Yellowjackets dominated the first half, outshooting the Cougars 6-3, including 3-0 in shots-on-goal.
The second half started out much like the first, with the Yellowjackets constantly in the Cougars zone. Despite this the Yellowjackets were unable to extend their lead.
Things got a little heated at the 64:14 mark, as Morris's Devin White ran Yellowjacket goalkeeper
Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area). Several Yellowjackets came to the defense of their goalkeeper, and after all the dust had settled White and Austin Keller were each assessed yellowcards.
Less than three minutes later the Yellowjackets made it 2-0 as
Mualigbe Keita (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Prairie Seeds Academy) scored the first goal of his college career. Keita took a
Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) feed and chipped a shot over the Morris goalkeeper. Two minutes later the Yellowjackets made it 3-0 as Bucklew scored his seventh goal of the season on a chip shot over the goalkeeper.
The Yellowjackets were on cruise control the rest of the way as they defeated the Cougars 3-0. The one sided affair saw the Yellowjackets outshoot Minnesota Morris 17-6, including 9-0 shots on goal.
The Yellowjackets are now 3-0-0 following a loss, and have shut out all three of their opponents in those games.
Wilhelm got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets and improved to 10-3-0 on the season.
Christ got the start in goal for the Cougars, allowing three goals while making six saves.
Next up for the Yellowjackets (11-3-0, 5-1-0 UMAC) is an October 15 trip over the bridge in a border-battle rematch against rival St. Scholastica. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
