Martin Luther trips up Yellowjackets

The Yellowjacket women's soccer team went on the road Saturday looking to get back into the win column when the faced off against UMAC foe Martin Luther. Things did not play out the way the Yellowjackets had hoped as they were defeated 3-1.

The Yellowjackets started out strong in the match, taking control of the ball and keeping it in the Martin Luther zone. This paid off at 18:51 when Britt Zieroth (Twig, Minn./Proctor) took a rebound off the post and put it in the back off the net to put the Yellowjackets up 1-0.

The lead was short lived as less than 20 minutes later Martin Luther's Jenna Maurer beat Yellowjacket goalkeeper Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) to tie the match 1-1 at 38:19. Maurer scored again at 41:03, weaving through several Yellowjacket defenders, to make it 2-1 Martin Luther.

The Yellowjackets held the advantage in shots in the first half 11-7, but were outshot in shots-on-goal 3-2.

The second half started out with the Yellowjackets once again controlling the ball as Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) and Hannah Buchite (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) each fired a shot on goal only to have them turned away. Martin Luther built an insurmountable lead when Hailey Johnson beat Henderson in the upper left side to make it 3-1 in the 65th minute, as the Knights held on for the victory.

The Yellowjackets once again had the advantage in shots for the second half 12-10. As it was in the first half Martin Luther had the advantage in shots-on-goal 5-4 beating the Yellowjackets where it matters most, the scoreboard.

Henderson started in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing three goals while making five saves in the losing effort. Her record drops to 0-7-0 on the year.

Julia Barthels started in goal for Martin Luther, allowing one goal while making five saves in the victory.

The Yellowjackets (2-10-0, 2-6-0) next match is Wednesday, October 21 when they travel to Ashland, Wis. to take on UMAC foe Northland College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
