The Yellowjacket women's soccer team traveled to Northland College Wednesday looking to break out of the current slump they are mired in. This would not be the case however, as Northland came away victorious with a goal in the 89th minute.

The Yellowjackets came out strong to start the match, controlling possession of the ball while outshooting the Lumberjills 10-4. Despite this advantage in shots, the Yellowjackets were unable to put one past Northland goalkeeper Alexadra Ritchie.

Northland drew first blood, when Laura Rethamann beat Yellowjacket goalkeeper Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) to take a 1-0 lead at 26:44. The Yellowjackets came right back after the goal with Britt Zieroth (Twig, Minn./Proctor) and Cheyenne Hirdler (Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka) both had shots on goal. As she had earlier in the half, Ritchie was able to turn the shots away and preserve the 1-0 Northland lead going into the half.

The second half saw the Yellowjackets once again control the ball as they looked for a goal of their own. Zieroth had the answer, tying the match up at 1-1 at 59:01 on her fourth goal of the season. That score held for most of the half, with the Yellowjackets generating many scoring opportunities that continued to be turned away. Northland broke the tie at 89:26 when Madeleine Wieland beat Paige for the game winner.

Paige started in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing two goals while making five saves.

Ritchie started in goal for the Lumberjills, allowing one goal while making 13 saves.

The Yellowjackets have been a bit snake-bitten this season, as they outshot Northland 19-13 including a 14-7 advantage in shots-on-goal. This is the fourth time this season that the Yellowjackets have outshot their opponent, but come up short on the scoreboard.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (2-11-0, 2-7-0 UMAC) is a return to the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex on Saturday, October 24 to take on UMAC opponent University of Northwestern (Minn.). Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
