Yellowjackets Blast Northwestern

The Yellowjacket men's soccer team was in action Saturday when they took on UMAC foe Northwestern. With second place in the UMAC already locked up, this could have been a letdown game for the Yellowjackets. Instead they turned it on, defeating Northwestern 5-0.

The Yellowjackets wasted little time getting on the board in this match, taking a 1-0 lead at 2:50 when Trevor Laroche-Theune (LaPointe, Wis./Bayfield ) beat the Northwestern goalkeeper top left off of a James Menzies (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) feed. The goal is Laroche-Theune's eight of the year.

Reyman Solis (Kirkland, Ill./Huntley) made it 2-0 Yellowjackets at 26:51, beating the Northwestern goalkeeper top right off of his free kick for his third of the year. The Yellowjackets had a chance to go up 3-0 at 36:32, but a Mualigbe Keita (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Prairie Seeds Academy) penalty kick was turned away by the Northwestern goalkeeper.

The first half was all Yellowjackets, as they outshot Northwestern 10-4, with a 6-3 advantage in shots-on-goal.

The second half had the same tone as the first, with the Yellowjackets dominating ball control. This dominance paid off at 68:17 when Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) went top left to score his eight goal of the season.  Just over 10 minutes later, Daniel Kearns (Greenock, Scotland/Clydeview Academy) scored his first goal of the season and of his Yellowjacket career when he managed to get behind the Northwestern goalkeeper for an open net shot. Kearns capped of the scoring four minutes later when he put a Nico Railef (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) cross in the back of the net.

The Yellowjackets outshot Northwestern 13-2 in the second half, holding a 7-1 advantage in shots-on-goal. For the match, the Yellowjackets outshot Northwestern 23-6, with a 13-4 advantage in shots-on-goal.

Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) started in goal for the Yellowjackets, making four saves in the shutout effort. This is the seventh shutout this season for Wilhelm who is now 13-5-0 on the season.

Turner Main started in goal for Northwestern, giving up five goals while making eight saves.

The Yellowjackets (14-5-0, 8-2-0 UMAC) have a week off before they host Concordia-Moorehead Saturday, October 31 at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
