Yellowjackets Deserve Better in loss to Northwestern

Box Score

Northwestern (Minn.) 1, Yellowjackets 0

The Yellowjacket women's soccer team has played noticeably better this season than in the past. They have outplayed their opponent in multiple matches this season only to see the final score not be in their favor. Saturday afternoon against Northwestern was another one of those games that the Yellowjackets could have won, only to see a chance at victory slip from their grasp as they fell 1-0.

Northwestern got things rolling early against the Yellowjackets with four shots, including two on goal. Yellowjacket goalkeeper Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) did her part to keep the Eagles at bay, with Paige saving both early shots.

It looked as though the Yellowjackets were primed to take the lead 15 minutes into the match. The Northwestern goalkeeper blasted a kick off the back of one of her defenseman and the ball bounced perfectly to Britt Zieroth (Twig, Minn./Proctor), who had nothing but open net infront of her. Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, Zieroth pushed the shot wide to keep the match tied up at 0-0.

Northwestern held the advantage in shots 9-4, and shots-on-goal 2-1 in the first half. It felt as though the Yellowjackets won the half, as they controlled the ball well thorough the half..

Northwestern came out with a bang in the second half, taking a 1-0 lead at 49:11 when Sydney Narloch beat Paige bottom left. It seemed as though the floodgates would open at any minute as the Eagles were continually on the offensive. Credit once again has to be given to Paige as well as the Yellowjacket defenders, who helped keep the score locked at 1-0.

The Yellowjackets looked as though they were going to tie it up with five seconds remaining. Taylor Piechocki (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc ) fired a shot labeled for the left side that would have tied the game as time expired, but she was thwarted by Northwestern goalkeeper Josie Monson made what may be the save-of-the-year as she dove, using every inch of her 5-6 frame to deflect the ball away.

The second half belonged to Northwestern as they outshot the Yellowjackets 9-3, including 4-1 shots-on-goal. For the match Northwestern outshot the Yellowjackets 18-7, with a 6-2 advantage in shots-on-goal.

Paige started in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing one goal while making five saves in the tough loss. She is now 2-5-0 on the season.

Josie Monson started in goal for Northwestern, making two saves in the shutout victory.

The Yellowjackets (2-12-0, 2-8-0) will be in action Wednesday, October 28 when they take on UW-Stout at home for the final match of the regular season. Game time from the NBC Spartan Sports Complex is 7:00 p.m.
