Yellowjackets Blank Crown, Win Fourth Straight

Yellowjackets 4, Crown 0

The Yellowjacket men's soccer team took to the pitch Saturday looking for its fourth straight win. If they accomplished that mission, not only would they have their second four-game winning streak of the season, but they would also move to 4-1 in the conference and secure their 10th win of the 2015 season, surpassing their total from all of last year.

In a convincing way, the mission was accomplished.

The Yellowjackets badly outshot and outplayed Crown in the contest, riding an early goal and sparkling defense to a 4-0 win over the Storm in St. Bonafacious, Minnesota.

Goals came early and often for the Yellowjackets Saturday, as they opened the scoring less than five minutes into the match. Taking a feed from James Menzies (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area), John Little (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) capitalized, scoring his second goal of his senior season to stake the Yellowjackets to a 1-0 lead at 4:53.

It stayed that way until shortly before halftime when the lead was extended. Trevor Laroche-Theune (LaPointe, Wis./Bayfield ), who scored goals in each of the first three games this season but hadn't scored since, snapped his goal-scoring drought, finding the mesh at 41:03 to make it 2-0. Silvio Brych (Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil/Elias Moreira) started the play on a free kick. Crown goalkeeper Justin Lao made the save, but Laroche-Theune banged home the rebound for his fourth of the year.

Just after halftime the Yellowjackets struck again. This time it was Joey Gustafson (Anoka, Minn./Anoka), scoring his fourth goal of the year on a penalty kick to stretch the lead to 3-0. Then in the 77th minute the Yellowjackets closed out the scoring when freshman Joao Moreira (Teresopolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Colegio Sao Paulo) scored his second of the year, bending a shot past Lao to make the final score 4-0. Taylor Lissick (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) was credited with the assist.

For the match the Yellowjackets outshot Crown 28-5. Shots on goal favored the Yellowjackets 16-3.

Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) got the start in goal and earned his ninth win and fourth shutout of the year. He finished the match with three saves. Lao was much busier at the other end, making 12 stops.

The Yellowjackets (10-2-0, 4-1 UMAC) are back home Sunday, October 4 when they host Saint John's University. Game time from the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex is set for 2:00 p.m.
