Yellowjackets Back On Track

Britt Zieroth scored her second goal of the season Saturday.
Box Score

Yellowjackets 3, Crown 0

You could tell that it would just be a matter of time for the Yellowjacket women's soccer team. It was just going to be a matter of time before they broke back into the win column. Following a close loss to St. Scholastica, they badly outplayed Bethany Lutheran on the road but couldn't buy a goal. Then Tuesday they suffered more heartbreak, having a home match with Northland slip through their collective fingers.

Saturday afternoon Crown College was the opponent, and the Storm were the perfect elixir for what ailed the Yellowjackets.

A goal just before halftime was all the offense the Yellowjackets needed, but they tacked on a pair of insurance goals in the second half to shut out the Storm 3-0 in St. Bonafacious, Minnesota.

The victory snapped a three-game losing skid for the Yellowjackets, who improved to 2-3 in UMAC play.

With the field tilted in the Yellowjackets' favor, they spent most of the first half sending shot after shot toward the Crown goal, but kept coming up empty and it looked like the teams would go into halftime scorless. That's when freshman Amanda Ambrose (Columbus, Ohio/Ramstein) picked a good time to score her first collegiate goal. Off a feed from Liza Shelquist (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) Ambrose scored her first of the year with just 88 seconds to play before the break to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead.

At Bethany Lutheran a week ago, Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) led the Yellowjackets with eight shots on goal. Tuesday against Northland she scored her first career goal. Then Saturday she made it two games in a row, scoring off an assist from Jordan Blomquist (Princeton, Minn./Princeton) in the 55th minute to make it a 2-0 game.

With the outcome never in doubt, the Yellowjackets added one more tally with under 10 minutes to play. Linzmeier started the play on a corner kick, and Britt Zieroth (Twig, Minn./Proctor) finished it, scoring her second goal of the year in the 83rd minute to make the final score 3-0.

For the match the Yellowjackets outshot the Storm 34-8. Shots on goal favored the Yellowjackets 16-4.

Allie Paige made her third start of the season Saturday and got the win, improving to 2-1-0. She made four saves to earn her first shutout of the season. At the other end Emily Kirby made 13 saves for Crown.

The Yellowjackets (2-6-0, 2-3-0 UMAC) are back on the road Wednesday, October 7 when they travel to St. Paul to take on Macalester College. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
