Yellowjackets Fall in Season Opener

Box Score

Saint Mary's 5, Yellowjackets 2

The 2015-16 hockey season is finally underway for the Yellowjacket women's ice hockey team. Unlike last year, when the Yellowjackets opened on the road, this season saw a debut Friday night against Saint Mary's University in front of the hometown crowd. The match also marked the inaugural game for the new scoreboard that was just installed this year at Wessman.

The Yellowjackets came out strong in the game, controlling the puck in the Saint Mary's zone. Despite this early dominance, the Yellowjackets were unable to break through to take a lead. Saint Mary's managed to draw first blood 11:33 into the first, when Jamie Henderson fired a shot past Yellowjacket goaltender Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate). Just like that the Cardinals had taken control of a period. Despite the Yellowjackets best efforts, they went into the break losing 1-0.

The Yellowjackets outshot Saint Mary's 18-11 in the first period, but were unable to find the back of the net.

The second period saw the Yellowjackets come out in a flurry, as they scored two goals in the first four minutes. Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park), the top returning scorer from last season, netted her first of the current campaign after she found a soft spot in the Cardinals defense to tie up at 1-1 1:18 into the period. Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) assisted on the even strength marker.

A little over two minutes later Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) made it 2-1 Yellowjackets with her first of the 2015-16 season. Adair was once again involved in the scoring, as her and Leah Elledge (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park) assisted on the tally.

Holding on to the one goal lead, Jessica Marsalla (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) went into the sin bin after she received a two-minute minor for roughing. The Yellowjacket defense held strong, blocking three Cardinal shots. Just as it appeared the Yellowjackets would escape the penalty unscathed, Saint Mary's Kassie Lien tied up the match with two second remaining in the penalty.

Two minutes later the Cardinals took the lead for good when Jane Hannula's shot found its way past Kobar. Yellowjacket coach Dan Laughlin had seen enough, pulling Kobar in favor of Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute). Kobar finished the night allowing three goals while making 11 saves, with only one in the second period. Brown fared much better, as she kept the score locked at 3-2 by turning away all 11 shots she faced in the period.

The third period saw Saint Mary's put the game out of reach, as they took an insurmountable lead when Molly Abraham scored off of a put back at 6:29. The Cardinals capped of the scoring with an empty netter at 18:40.

Kobar started in net, taking the loss for the Yellowjackets. Brown relieved her and finished strong, allowing one goal while making 24 saves in 30:01 minutes of playing time.

Adair started her 2015-16 campaign strong, finishing with a goal and an assist.

Tori Hermann started in goal for Saint Mary's, allowing two goals and making 36 saves in the winning effort.

The Yellowjackets (0-1-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) take on Saint Mary's again tomorrow. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 2:00 p.m.
